Today I'll start a #train journey from Berlin to Lisbon. I dont want to take the plane for ecological reasons, so lets see how this experiement goes!

🗺️ 3000 km
⌛42hours
🚄 7 changes

I'll post updates on this thread, bets on when this will go wrong are accepted!

I'm feeling very lucky that #interrail exists in Europe, otherwise this would be impossible to plan!

My first leg of the journey starts tonight, going from Berlin (22:00) to Brussels (9:30) in a #europeansleeper night train. Let's see how comfy these 60year old cars are!

Well that starts out great already, my train is delayed because it is "waiting for a delayed boat" ???
Good morning! I forgot to post yesterday, but the train/ship eventually came and the ride was pretty nice, I was able to get a good amount of sleep and we just arrived in Brussel in time.

A good start in the day, everything is on time! I also equipped myself with Akimbo-Waffles for breakfast.

Today is going to be the longest day, I'll be nearly non-stop driving until I reach Madrid at 11pm, with two changes in Lyon and Barcelona. So far so good!

That went surprisingly well again! 10minutes delay coming into Lyon, but there was more than enough time left for the change. On my way to Barcelona now, I'm very optimistic that I'll reach Madrid this evening!

On time again in Barcelona and left on time to my finally last destination today, Madrid.
Funnily enough, I'm sitting in the same train model that's used for the Highspeed-Service ICE in Germany.

It'll take around 3h for this 500km journey

Wow everything went just as planned today, I arrived in Madrid on time 🙏
I'll stay here for the night, get some rest and then tomorrow morning I'll take the final part of the journey to Lisbon.

The waiting hall here is really beautiful 🤗🌴(photo not mine though)

On my way to Lisbon!
This is probably the riskiest part of the journey. The connection between Madrid and Lisbon is just not good. No highspeed, not even a direct connection. The same 500km that took just 3 hours yesterday will now take 9 hours and a few changes. Let's see!
Arrived in Lisboa just as planned!
All in all that trip went far better than I would have thought. Not one missed train, not even a delay of more than 10 minutes!
I'm really happy that such long journeys via train are possible 🤗
@ratdaddy
Hope you like it! Check out some Fado shows while you're there!

But what about the emissions? (Napkin math)

Round trip Berlin-Lisboa:

Train ~72kg CO²
- 1920km * 30g CO²/km in DE/ES/PRT
- 1100km * 3,6g CO²/km in FR
- 2* 10kg CO² stay in Hostel

Flight ~ 1060kg CO²
- 380kg direct
- 680kg passive

So less than 10% CO² compared to a flight❗
