It's time to pick apples. Here's what I'm calling the spitz, or Esopus Spitzenburg apples picked off the two trees. Maybe about 13 gallons or 50 liters in volume.

The last spitz picked, it was the only one on those trees I needed to use the ladder to pick and it looks great.

The Jonathan's. 7 milk crates from the big tree and almost a full tubtrug from the one graft limb on the gravenstein tree.

@firephoto I love Jonathan apples but I read online that they get cedar apple blight really badly. Do you spray?
@jblue We don
t have that out west that I know of. Fire blight is the blight of concern around here, or most places I suppose but it's dealt with mostly by pruning and burning that pruned material.

I'll have about 12 milk crates of apples, this will only fill up the three buckets.

I usually selectively pick but I picked everything that wasn't brown and rotten. They say it adds flavor. We'll see. I smelled some of the various bad spots on the apples and nothing smelled bad.

One crate each of Jonathans and Spitz for storage and pies.

@firephoto interested at the bag. Is that a special bag to carry in an orchard when picking?

@berkes Yes, the top is a solid metal bar in the oval shape covered with some leather and the bag sewed onto that. The bottom has ropes on each corner with knots and you pull it up and fold it and put it into hooks on the sides of that bar and the knots hold it in the desired position. You can have it high, then lower it to hold more apples as you pick.

This is an old, and small bag, they make ones that are longer.

There are also ones that use a metal can for the top part and a bag below it.

@berkes This is the modern version, which they still make one out of cotton, but others are nylon.

@firephoto thanks!

Here I am, for years balancing ladders with a bucket in one hand. Never to realize that a special bag is safer, easier and actually very logically. ๐Ÿ˜†
