A reminder that Mastodon has no algorithm that pushes posts favorited by others. This is a fundamental difference with the way Twitter works. If you like a toot and want others to see it, the best way to do that is to boost. Favoriting a post helps the author know you liked it but doesn't do much more.

@dangoodin mastodon does have trends, and favoriting posts increases the trend score, so it does a little more than just send a notification to the author :p

it's not like twitter where it will shove things you like in other peoples' feeds, it's just... good, actually. favoriting posts should be encouraged!

i find this “favs are worthless” mentality is what makes my home feed so cluttered and exhausting, despite following under 100 accounts – everyone on mastodon reposts everything they like, pretty much. i’d prefer people reposting less and starring more, tbh…

They tell me my post was appreciated, and here in the fedi where we have actual conversations, those likes matter, they’re like nods and mmm-hmm and calls of support and they are welcome! Of course, if people decide my post is something they want to share with their followers, that’s really nice too.

Yeah, I realy like this feature. Finally I can just throw around my likes as compliments without thinking about some kind of repercussions.
