It seems that #Bluesky is getting some traction, so it's good to summarize the facts:
- it's centralized (99% of users on one instance),
- it has insufficient moderation,
- it's not easily publicly browsable,
- it has terrible terms of service (you grant them broad rights to all your content).

The only thing that makes it different from X in principle is that it's not run by a mad man (yet)... Ah, I forgot it's Jack Dorsey's project, nevermind.

@sesivany Facts. Ok.

Jack has left it far behind. And yeah, the moderation is weird. Mostly the trans girlies block a ton of people and make lists about people to bloack.

@sesivany I can't get an invite. Go figure. 😂😂

@sesivany The other big difference between Bluesky and Twitter/Threads/Mastodon is that it’s not open to the public yet. You still need an invite to join

I’m waiting until it’s open to everyone before I even bother looking at it

@sesivany A lot of people seem to forget that Twitter wasn't all rainbows and unicorns before the current chucklehead took over.
@sesivany I have no idea why people are there, it feels like you are on an app made for a school project.
@sesivany those terms of services means that they plan to sell your content to AI trainers for additional funds. I rather stick to this nice community driven forum here.

@sesivany @mastodonmigration

It seems totally set up for purposes of AI scraping.

I’m not sure why Jack felt he had to start new just to do THAT.

Another thing I think he wanted, that original Twitter did NOT have (it created its own virtual one based on personal interest instead ) is an IRL ‘network effect’ of the type Facebook always had, that might be more likely to be exploited in different ways; a INVITED member has a better chance of being a real vetted person (to exploit), not a bot

@sesivany @mastodonmigration

Bot swarms and artificial claques by people trying to reach mass appeal, and an archive going back 15 years were stressing servers were creating more costs than profits. He was shaking off overhead.

@Chancerubbage @sesivany You saying Jack was just hungry for some fresh meat?
@mastodonmigration @sesivany I think he wanted to have a clean pantry with less infestations and better organization to find and use his ‘groceries’. A kitchen remodel.
@Chancerubbage @sesivany Then started sending out invitations to his groceries. Makes sense.

@sesivany
I think, people love that it's centralized.
98 % of my former Twitter folks (many of them tried Mastodon) just wanted a new place to stay and connect.
They didn't understand why they at first should disperse and then without a global user search have trouble finding each other.

@mastodonmigration

@nobilor @sesivany Mastodon has improved both technologically and socially since the 2022 twitter migration. Maybe suggest they give it another try.

Bluesky is simple, but it is really just another corporate surveillance capitalist platform. They may not think this is important to them, but it really should be.

@sesivany

"it's centralized"

For ordinary people this is its main selling points. I've given up trying to get people to Mastodon, because they just get confused about the multiple server-solution.

Bsky is a drop in replacement. Very low friction to switch.

@qeruiem @sesivany Yeah this is definitely a feature to many. You join and off you go. Not like Mastodon is rocket science but there is a learning curve and it seems beyond a sizable percentage of users. Maybe some kind of quickstart mechanism would help, but not trivial to see how it would work.

@jalager @sesivany First time I joined here I tried very hard to find the right instance etc yada, but that server was shut down because the guy got fed up with all the drama, server blocks and shit.

Second time I joined I just picked the default, because I expect mastodon.social to be "too big to fail". Ie I pretty much went for the centralised option.

Mastodon will probably in the future more or less be mastodon.social with some fringe servers around it, because convenience.

@jalager @sesivany It goes against the idea with Mastodon, but that is at the same time probably what HAS to happen for it to be generally accepted. The alternative is that Bsky will just roll over Mastodon and Mastodon will be just another social media backwater that slowly wither and dies.

@sesivany You should write that on Blue Sky instead of preaching to the choir.

Have to admit that the content is currently significantly better on Blue Sky than on Mastodon.

I think it's likely a mistake to force people to choose a Mastodon server. mastodon.social ought to be the default choice. Otherwise people in general will think it's too troublesome and turn at the door. That it gets more centralized than some would want is a necessary sacrifice if there's to be a chance to win the users.

@sesivany So I asked a friend as the waitlist is futile and got in. Terribly disappointed in the iPad app as it’s just the iPhone app surrounded by black, waste of space. It’s better on the web. Jack supports RFK Jr vs Elon who supports DeSantis, clue.
