Latest comic on a certain pundit's infamous $78 airport meal

(For those outside the US, the commentator David Brooks has made a career out of piously trolling liberals for their supposed decadence and lack of morals.)

I believe that the economy still feels tough for many people because the cost of living is still high relative their incomes, even if inflation is trending down. But what Brooks did here appears to be intellectually dishonest, a lapse of journalistic ethics in the service of a political cheap shot.
@jensorensen I could argue that columnists have become far more stupid and/or disconnected from reality, but then I learned yesterday about Tom Wolfe and how his "radical chic" fucked the contacts of the Black Panthers Party and I think most columnists have always been a bunch of fuckers.
@Illuminatus @jensorensen it's pretty hard to survive in the biz without being a self promoting sanctimonious twat who decides the story before they start the interview and goes for maximum outrage. The humble investigative reporters get shat on time and then again for not producing results people want and not making the paper money and making people feel complex bad emotions that produce backlash, so they rarely last (or pay the bills some other way)
@jensorensen As I saw someone say on a different platform- "If he were complaining about the high price of liquor at airports, he might have had a point."
@jensorensen Income inequality is why people feel this way. The economy as a whole is in pretty good shape, but the GOP led shrinking of the middle class means that fewer people than ever are feeling the effects.
@the_blackwell_ninja Absolutely true, which is what makes Brooks' lament even more hypocritical, since he's basically a GOP enabler.
@the_blackwell_ninja @jensorensen Income inequality and a complete lack of affordable housing.
@jensorensen Last week, I paid $35 for two cans of beer at a concert. This has nothing to do with inflation, it has to do with monopoly power, like at airports.
They figure if you are there, you can afford it. And they are generally right - and you have no choice anyway.
@jensorensen David Brooks' entire career consists of political cheap shots.
@jensorensen the take I have been getting is that the vast majority feel their own personal situation is pretty good, but those who listen to certain media sources get convinced that elsewhere in the USA things are dire. No evidence, they just know that plants are closing, farmers are quitting, and that the unemployment statistics are faked, and so on.
@jensorensen I was kind of surprised that when he was asked about this incident on the PBS news hour he said it was really stupid of him to have tried to make this joke and he wished he hadn't posted it.
@philtor @jensorensen typical republican tactic. Say something that’s misleading or an outright lie and when people don’t buy your bullshit, claim it was a joke. There’s nothing funny about the claims he was making. There wasn’t any joke. He just got burned and said “oh I shouldn’t have made that ‘joke’”.
@jensorensen "When 80% of your bill is alcohol" "Leaving Newark Airport" Starring David Brooks.
@jensorensen wow, I guess the economy is actually doing well and economists are failing to see that because they buy expensive things

@jensorensen I mean, he was pretty buzzed after 3 to 4 glasses of airport bourbon lol.

I did catch him on PBS admitting his post missed the mark with regular Americans, you know who pack their own food and get in line to refill their water bottle to avoid paying airport monopoly food prices.

@DougJayne I found his apology slippery too, as he referred to himself as "an upper middle class journalist having a bourbon at an airport." It seems highly unlikely that he's merely upper middle class, and by all accounts he had more than a bourbon!
@jensorensen i believe it was 3 bourbons in a single glass.

@jensorensen

You know you’ve screwed up on #Twitter when cartoonists are telling the story

Brilliant from @jensorensen

@jensorensen one of the reasons that punditute used to be so dangerous was because he was a good writer and could make almost any sh*t sandwiches that Repugs try to sell seem reasonable. He cheerled and rationalized as the US conducted a "pre-emptive war" on a sovereign country under W (much like a Russian asshole is currently doing). I hate that guy with a really intense passion. I'm glad more folks have seen through his blithering fake pious pomposity.

@jensorensen
David Brooks is the classic dangerous "gray man".

His columns start with benign truisms about topics of the day. But there is ALWAYS a key sentence halfway thru where he introduces an unsubstantiated strawman as a given and then pivots to an attack on liberals.

See for yourself.

@jensorensen it's ironic because like. i'm having a bad time with money and i just do not go to airports at all lol, an airport is a place i'd only expect to be in if i had moderate disposable income or a job that sends you places

@jensorensen

I'm in the UK, this could any one of a number of curmudgeonly newspaper and TV pundits!

@jensorensen
Have I told you recently that you rock?

No?

You rock, Jen.

@jensorensen David Brooks is being roasted for spending beaucoup bucks on airport booze, but to be fair, he is just trying to numb the pain and feeling of emptyness inside that comes from being a talentless hack who writes glib both-sider nonsense for an overrated mediocre newspaper.
@jensorensen I would think such a proud defender of #capitalism would laud such a strong barrier to having to rub elbows with those too poor to afford such a meal.
