As a general rule, I hate the idea of "Favorites", because it tends to downplay the new in favor of the familiar,

but fine, @antonhand asked, so here, Personal Top 25, in no particular order. Maybe some surprises? Maybe not? Heh.

EDIT: Also, the choice of Morrowind isn't meaningless, but that isn't thumbing my nose at Skyrim. I have played SO MUCH Skyrim (Legacy of the Dragonborn was incredible). I just think Morrowind was the last TES game that was truly great in and of itself.

@_benui @antonhand It's INCREDIBLE. I can just, lose myself in it forever. It is by a huge margin my favorite city builder. Like the city builder equivalent of doing sand mandalas.

Always nice to see Thousand Year Door, I adore that game.
Will you be getting the Switch remake when it comes out?

I know what you mean, I really struggle to put a favourites list in order, I can give you 25 games I love, no problem, but telling you whether I prefer Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles or Crusader Kings 3?
That's much more difficult.

and yeessss I want both the Thousand Year Door AND the Super Mario RPG remakes. Because I never got into the first one, bit jank, but I heard it was quite good.

It's quite similar to Thousand Year Door from what I remember, in that it's quite funny and I believe it makes use of the quicktime critical hit/defence type system. Been absolutely years since I played it though.
I'm more hyped for the Thousand Year Door remake, but I'll probably get the other one too.

@glassbottommeg @antonhand When I first met my wife our first interaction was when creating a list like this! There is (was?) a website that let you pit every game against every other game in a tournament to figure out which were your favorites. It was a lot of fun, I wonder if it's still around and has new games added to it.

@rlabrecque @glassbottommeg @antonhand yea I think a more structured approach is great because every time I make one of the I immediately look at someone else's list and go OMG HOW DID I LEAVE FALLOUT OFF MY LIST I PLAYED THAT FOR LIKE 500 HOURS.

Interesting to see Ultima 7 in there, it would for sure be on mine too.

Surprising to me is Death Stranding; it's the only one on there I've played and didn't like.

@marshian it'll either work for you or it won't, I figure, but it's essentially a new genre, and experiencing that was profound. It's. I dunno. You can draw a line from BOTW to Death Standing. It's very cool.

@glassbottommeg that makes some sense. I didn't really like BOTW either (I know, I'm weird) but I could at least kinda understand why people like it -- maybe I didn't give Death Stranding enough of a chance, but I'm very "I'm not having fun, life is too short for this" for games.

@marshian it is very slow. The absolute best part of the game is after the end credits roll. There are hour long cutscenes.

It's impossible to recommend to anyone not willing to give it TIME, heh. Takes probably 4 hours to get to where you even start to see what it's doing.

@glassbottommeg Cool list. I'm honestly surprised we have as much overlap as we do, insofar as you have a bunch of games on here that didn't make my top 25, but DEFFO would make my top 50.

@glassbottommeg @antonhand oh man, a top 25 is way harder than you'd think....so many great games. Limited myself to only putting my favorite game in a series (or in the case of stuff like parodius/bloodborne the "extended" series of similar games from same dev) for series I love. (I actually like SRW Alpha Gaiden better than 30 but AG wasn't in the database!)

Also a huge fan of ultima but I love Underworld a BIT more than 7, my favorite zelda also kinda cycles between 2 and links awakening dx.
