Errr....
Come live in the UK.
Not perfect, but the trains work.
Even under the sea...
@coja I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here and say that most people in the suburbs don't want public transit stops too close to where they live (the whole NIMBY thing), and most people in the suburbs don't want to live in the city.
Personally, I kinda like the idea of my workplace being 30km away, my church being 10km away, the nearest big shop being 7km away. Because it means that my neighbourhood is nice and quiet. But it actually wouldn't be possible to live like that without cars...
Although, there's buses, I suppose. But they're noisy and crowded and smelly. And unreliable... but that's what your meme wants to change. So in hindsight, if buses were so reliable and so plentiful that I never had to check a schedule and I never had to wait for one, I'm sure they'd be a lot more pleasant to ride too. So actually, I've convinced myself: I agree with you 100%! :-)
@coja To the second part of your meme, I really really really love flying. I love everything about it. In another life, I'd be a pilot. Given the choice between travelling somewhere on the ground and travelling through the air, I'll pick the air every single time. There's no greater experience that being up there above the clouds. Weightless.
But it's also something I very seldom get to do because it's very expensive and I don't travel much anyway. I suspect if I was one of those people that had to fly every single week, I'd get sick of it quickly. Having to be at the airport two hours before your flight is a pain, I'll admit.
But if trains were as fast as planes and as popular, trains would start to become just as tempting a target for terrorists as planes have. And we'd have to respond by introducing all the same security measures at train stations. And you'd have the same thing. 🤔
@GrahamDowns I love flying and I like driving, but maybe you have to experience working #PublicTransport to really appreciate how awesome it is and why property prices actually rise and do not fall 🙂
Because then also the lifestyle you describe is possible without cars and with you having to drive your kids everywhere every day.
That is actually on of the (few... 😀 ) things I am missing a lot here in #Johannesburg & #SouthAfrica in general.
When I am in #Germany, I am traveling a lot between '#Munich and #Hamburg currently (about 620km as the crow flies). I am practically always doing that by #IntercityExpress (ICE) trains, the German #HighspeedRail network. It is about 7h from door to door, approx an hour or two more than flying but a bit cheaper and much more convenient.
I buy one ticket which includes the #subway in Munich and Hamburg, I need to be at the train station only 5-10min before the train departs. I have #Wifi in the train and ample space to work, read, sleep. There is a dining car or in First Class (which is a bit more spacious) service at your seats.
Unlike when flying, I don't spend an hour waiting here, standing in the security queue, waiting an hour there, flying one hour etc.
If I miss a train, no problem, there are at least hourly connections between all major and medium sized cities (something like #RichardsBay or #Makhanda in South Africa), so I take the next one.
@GrahamDowns You are mostly talking about personal preference, that's what the current system is focusing on, which is not scalable, sustainable, etc. It should exist but not as a default.
Check the video @yogthos posted, explains a lot, liked it.
Agree with the terrorist argument for international transport, that's definitely the future problem.
@hnygd
Hope a solution will emerge for that problem soon.
