If the GOP shuts down the government, that means 1.3 million servicemembers will go without pay. This after a Republican senator, Tommy Tuberville, has single-handedly put a hold on all top-level military promotions and appointments because he disagrees with the Pentagon’s policy of reimbursing travel expenses for members who must seek abortions out of state. Remind me again why the GOP thinks it’s pro-military.
@georgetakei Because they say they are, and their disciples in the death cult don't dare to question it.

@georgetakei

The public will have had enough, and Dems sweep in '24.

@zachvat @georgetakei
I pray you're right...I fear you're wrong.

@zachvat @georgetakei

Never underestimate the stupidity of people and the diabolical means those in power will use to manipulate it or silence their voices at the polls.

@zachvat @georgetakei 40% of the electorate still think that Trump is a qualified candidate, so no, Dems will not sweep in '24. They'll be lucky to hold what they have.

This kind of doe-eyed enthusiasm is dangerous magical thinking.

Republicans have controlled the message for the last 50 years. Dems have done nothing to win it back. The media has become a GOP booster club for treating both sides as equal.

24 is going to be trench warfare. Expect to lose if we hope the public just shows up.

@georgetakei Most active duty and even more veterans voted for Trump in 2020 and will do so again in 2024. Might not make sense to us but the military loves that guy.
@mfurlan do you have a source on that? everything I’ve seen is that US military tend to vote in line with the population they are recruited from.
@standev “Military Posts are, for the most part, still reliably Republican. Trump won them by about 12 points.” https://www.americancommunities.org/final-presidential-results-show-substantial-shifts-in-exurbs-hispanic-centers-and-military-posts/
Final Presidential Results Show Substantial Shifts in Exurbs, Hispanic Centers, and Military Posts – American Communities Project

@mfurlan that seems to be a category of locations and not reflective of service members vs local community necessarily. For example, I voted in my home state for almost my entire military career.
@mfurlan given the location of military installations (mostly rural and in red states) it is unsurprising that people who live in those areas trend republican.
@mfurlan That said, the Economist chose a different lede on the same precinct info: https://www.economist.com/united-states/2021/10/14/military-bases-swung-hard-away-from-republicans-in-2020
Military bases swung hard away from Republicans in 2020

By our calculations they moved towards Democrats by eight points, compared with a nationwide swing of just two

The Economist
@mfurlan Military Times polling in the leadup to the 2020 election had specific polling of military members showing a preference for Biden: https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2020/08/31/as-trumps-popularity-slips-in-latest-military-times-poll-more-troops-say-theyll-vote-for-biden/
Trump’s popularity slips in latest Military Times poll — and more troops say they’ll vote for Biden

About half of troops surveyed for the poll said they have an unfavorable view of the commander in chief.

Military Times
@mfurlan @georgetakei does this mean the military (in general ) are authoritarian at heart?
@georgetakei This is the most anti-police, anti-defense GOP in history.

It's worse than that. At least half a million military families won't be able to buy groceries, pay rent, or cover vital expenses. Any military family knows what a struggle it is for the enlisted troops to make ends meet when they are paid on time.

Good luck doing that without a paycheck at the beginning of the month.

@georgetakei

They’re complete scum. They want a nation of servants and slaves. And apparently that also includes the security forces if they can get away with it.

@georgetakei not being pro paid military doesn’t necessarily main not being pro (unpaid) military. It is the pro child labour and slavery party after all.
@georgetakei Same reason as in the X-Files episode where a serial killer kidnaps a psychic to divine why he's a serial killer.
"Because you're a lunatic!"
"Oh, that's why!"
@georgetakei Tuberville didn't put a hold on promotions 'single-handedly', the Senate allowed that to happen.
@georgetakei Maybe the military will figure out who is really for them and stop voting for pukes.
@georgetakei of course, those senators and governors will continue getting full pay.
@georgetakei In truth, the GOP doesn't admit to being pro-anything. This is because the few things they are for aren't popular.

@georgetakei

Tuberville doesn't care about abortion access.

His logjam on Senate confirmations is a grift. He is extorting concessions on behalf of his GOP billionaire donors.

He was unsuccessful at getting the FBI and Space Command relocated to Huntsville Alabama to increase the kind of graft that led to the littoral ship fiasco.

No federal agency should be relocated to a red state. It'll simply become another boondoggle.

All Republicans do is donor maintenance.

Tommy Tuberville Furious as Joe Biden Strips Alabama of Space Command

Tuberville has been blocking hundreds of military promotions to protest the Pentagon's abortion policies.

Newsweek

@Npars01 @georgetakei
I've gotta believe some to Tuberville's donor money arrives in Rubles.

Russia couldn't ask for a better assault on the US military command structure.

@Npars01 @georgetakei

federal agencies and military bases should start moving out of red states if they want recruit new people and not have a mass exodus ...

@dibi58 @Npars01 @georgetakei The strict separation into "red" & "blue" states hasn't been a concern of heart for Abraham Lincoln.
And it hasn't ever been an issue for Lincoln's true successor Joe Biden. Both have always been true to their official duty to seek, what unites the people, who chose to elect them for their abilities to unite, liberate & improve the livelihoods of the people, who entrusted them with their representation.
Joe Biden & his team are a good choice taking care, that the people's affairs are handled fairly, competently & profitably for all Americans.

@Npars01 @georgetakei
Take Federal jobs of of AL.

@Hash @georgetakei

Huntsville Alabama is located deep within the former Confederacy.

Red states like Alabama are ruled by anti-democracy oligarchs seeking leverage.

Red states remember the mistakes of the Civil War and are taking steps to control the manufacture of military capability for their next attack on the Union

Note the agencies Tuberville wanted relocated. Not Consumer Protection or Public Health & education.

He wanted Space Command & the FBI.

@Npars01 @Hash @georgetakei
Makes sense with red-state secession in their plans.
@georgetakei GOP pretends they’re “stickin’ it to the man” with their shutdown BS. But they’re really stickin’ it to the people.
@georgetakei pro-defense contractor. Not pro-soldier.

@georgetakei

It is easier to comprehend the thinking of conservatives once you realize that their way of life depends on the existence of an underclass.

@georgetakei the GOP is pro-hate and pro-self interest, they dont give a crap about anyone but themselves and will lie to get their way no matter what. they need to be removed from all forms of office before its too late.

@georgetakei

Wonder why people keep actually voting for this backstabbing evil bunch…

@georgetakei

Pro-military???

"Late Friday night, the former #POTUS... insinuated that America’s top general deserves to be put to death...

And yet, none of the nation’s front pages blared “Trump Suggests That Top General Deserves Execution” or “Former President Accuses General of Treason.” Instead, the post barely made the news. Most Americans who don’t follow #Trump on #SocialMedia probably don’t even know it happened"

Trump Suggests That Mark Milley Deserves Execution

The former president is inciting violence against the nation’s top general. America’s response is distracted and numb.

The Atlantic

@ZhiZhu @georgetakei My honest take? I'm glad the press is ignoring his outrageous social media takes.

They don't know how to cover him. They insist on treating him like a legitimate player in our national politics. If they treated his threat as significant they would feel compelled to fabricate a context by which it might be justifiable.

As far as his coup-y social media outbursts go, MSM silence is better than the alternative.

@georgetakei what the GOP is in favor of is using the military to ensure wealthy U.S. owners can extract resources from foreign countries to increase their wealth and overall inequality. They want military power to support exploitation, which is unrelated to wanting anything good for members of the armed forces.
