“After every #MassShooting, we hear a very simple message ... do something,” Biden said in the WH Rose Garden. “My administration has been working tirelessly to do something,” he added, pointing to executive actions his admin had taken on #GhostGuns & #GunTrafficking, as well as the Bipartisan #SaferCommunitiesAct, landmark legislation that became #law in 2022.

The new office, acc/to #Biden, is one more attempt to answer that call, helping, for example, to “coordinate support for #survivors, families, & communities affected by #GunViolence,” an effort that he said would be similar to #FEMA, the govt’s on-the-ground emergency response team. The office will also seek to ID more executive actions the president can take.

Biden noted that he would continue to urge #Congress to take #legislative action on #banning #AssaultWeapons & implementing #UniversalBackgroundChecks. Until then, he said the WH & activists will move forward with or without them.
There have been >500 #MassShootings in 2023, acc/to Gun Violence Archive, & >30k #firearm-related #deaths. #GunViolence deaths among #teens & #children also rose an alarming 50% between 2019 & 2021 to become the leading cause of death for children in the #UnitedStates.
