Barrière de #StGilles is one of the most infamous places in terms of #mobility in #Brussels. A complete makeover is coming up: #trams will cross the roundabout instead of going around, safer pedestrian crossings, some green, no more traffic lights or cobblestones. Detailed plans are available here: https://openpermits.brussels/fr/_13/PFD/1903271

Avenue du Parc | 1060 Saint-Gilles

The redesign of #Brussels own #ParkAvenue is part of the same permit. The street is to get extra trees, some cycle infrastructure and more comfortable tram and bus stops. Famous Friterie de la Barrière can stay...
@citygeek Ah that looks ok! It’s a nasty street there just now, and this looks like progress.
@jon Today's plan is more ambitious than older plans that didn't happen some years ago. Hopefully the political support will be strong enough in the face of expected protests (new one way streets, less on street parking...). Brussels has seen some rioting about this kind of changes recently, resulting in politicians backing off. Also we have regional and municipal elections coming up next year ...
@citygeek Right. But surely the type of people living in at least a large part of that area ought to be ok with these plans? (I lived next to the St Gilles prison last time I lived in Brussels so I know the area)

@jon @citygeek The rioters never represented a majority of people. Usually the majority is indifferent before the change is implemented. It's only when they see how much nicer it is afterwards that the new layout becomes popular.

That's why the rioters act early, before the changes have time to settle in. Nobody is demanding the return of cars in Bd Anspach.
