Sorry to hear. Been there, I never want to return, but I know I probably will at some point. You are spot on...it is exhausting.
Even though my dad's behavior is mostly controlled...there's just certain times of the day he gets a aggravated a little too easily, but it's still kept under control. Having to adjust when we do things to avoid those times. Like eating dinner a little earlier so he can go to bed when he wants to.
Sorry about that. My aunt and her husband were taking care of my grandmother during her illness. No walk in the park.
So much so that when my own dear papa decided to call my aunt and uncle "moochers" when I was visiting in Montréal, I walked up to my bedroom, repacked my stuff, got out the front door, walked to a nearby convenience store, called a taxi to take me to my mother's house, flew back to the US (where I live), and did not talk to my father for a number of years.
