Most of you probably won't like this, but I think within 18 months Bluesky is going to emerge as the most popular alternative to Twitter.
@conradhackett Perhaps "popularity" isn't the fundamental criteria to judge the value of a social media platform.
@halfempty Well, one of the things I liked about Twitter was that due to its size, it was possible to find people talking about things happening NOW, whether local weather situations, TV shows, etc. Critical mass makes such wide-ranging timely discussions possible.
@conradhackett Certainly, a sufficient participation must exist for the platform to be effective. Personally, I have found a sufficient level in the Fediverse, in both Mastodon and Lemmy/Kbin.
@conradhackett @halfempty What I liked most about Twitter was the particular people who I could interact with there. Some (especially journos and local politicos) are still just there, some have moved here, some to bsky, some doubtless to other places I don't go (e.g. Threads). Wherever most of them end up is where I'll mostly be. I think you're right about critical mass, but different people prefer different masses.
@conradhackett - Sounds fine, so long as there actually is a popular alternative.
@conradhackett Probably. It's more or less a #Twitter clone. I wasn't particularly impressed.
@conradhackett People trusting corporate social media after the Musk debacle is pretty funny. Who even owns Bluesky?
@conradhackett Another measure of our failure as an ethical species.
@conradhackett hmm thanks for letting me know to keep it on Mt radar
@conradhackett hmm thanks for letting me know to keep it on my radar
@conradhackett i started calling it "brewsky", hopefully they follow suit jk
@conradhackett If it and Threads ever federate, it may not matter. We’d all be able to talk with each from our favorite platform.
@conradhackett Only thing I don't like about that is the poor client interfaces Bluesky currently has. I'm sure increased popularity, or maybe just time, will mend that.

@conradhackett

Bluesky is "popular" because it's being hyped by the same Wall Street scam artists who promoted NFT's, cryptocurrency, and AI plausible sentence generators.

OPEC+ billionaires have an insatiable appetite for investments that subvert democracy.

So does Russia, China, Larry Ellison, Dorsey & Musk.

@conradhackett. i’ve put myself on the “waiting list” several times over the months, and i’ve yet to receive a sign-up code. guess they have enough weird people 😔

have you checked out Post.News? it’s …all right; kinda stuffy (like, the “cool” old people hang out. that’s how i feel about substack, too. but that’s not really social media). not using spoutible yet (there was a tif between bouzy and caroline orr, a researcher i respect)

mastodon’s been all right. quiet, though.

@conradhackett if anybody wants to check it out vicariously, https://firesky.tv

@amongmadpeeps I recommend asking around for a Bluesky code. Many people have them now and most invites are being distributed this way to minimize bot signups. I’ve given out all my codes.
