Ask your Fox-watching friends if they’ve seen stories about Rep. Lauren Boebert publicly groping with her date and vaping at a public performance of Beetlejuice, all with kids present. Bet they’ll look at you blankly because Fox has simply not aired the story since it broke according to media watchers.

Fox knows Boebert is in a district she nearly lost in 2022, and that the road to the House majority might run through Colorado’s 3rd. The network isn’t “fair and balanced.” That’s a joke. Fox is warped and twisted, just like the party it services.

Pro-tip: change the content controls on home cable systems so technologically challenged folks can’t access Fox. You might just save them from being sucked in further.

@georgetakei We need the DNC to either a) have a national strategy to un-tie right wing media from the GOP base's brains, or b) put back the legal requirement of being actually fair and balanced into all news licenses.

@aka_quant_noir @georgetakei The problem is that as a cable provider, the Fairness Doctrine would never have applied to Fox. As a cable only channel they don't broadcast over public airwaves so they don't require a broadcast license.

@rthonpm @georgetakei Maybe not as it was. An upgraded Fairness Doctrine could be more robust. It could apply to more media, regulate more conduct, and treat access to the public eyeballs with an eye to electoral manipulation.

Also I've been saying for years that America took the wrong road when it licensed our broadcast frequencies. We should have demanded free air time for political candidates as part of the deal, then prohibited political ads enriching all these corporate TV news orgs.

@aka_quant_noir @georgetakei The problem you'll run into trying to expand outside of licensed airwaves is a big first amendment issue. The FCC controls broadcast airwaves, which a return of the Fairness Doctrine could at least strike a blow at right wing radio, but areas outside of its remit are going to prove very difficult.

@rthonpm @georgetakei There are many obstacles, legal and otherwise. Ensuring good faith and fair play may require a few changes to the balance in the 1st amendment jurisprudence. I don't even think anyone is going to start down this path in my lifetime, but I still like to put these ideas out there.

@airira @georgetakei But no one can publish ALL the news, and that’s part of being fair and balanced or not. There has to be an editorial process, someone has to decide what is an isn’t presented. Fox is making a deliberate editorial decision about what to publish, which is what all news organizations do. No, it’s not fair and balanced. Yes, it is biased. But all human editorial decisions are.

@lhauser @georgetakei Yes but you have it wrong. The decision to choose which stories to cover is shaded (biased is too strong a word in my opinion). But presenting the story must be factual. That is the essence of journalism. What, where, who, how and why. If you watch any broadcast network news program, the main story is the largest news item of the day. Watch more than one network on the same day. I’ll bet they all lead with the same story, told in the same way.

If you’re keeping score in the antics by members of the Lauren Boebert family these are the current standings:

Lauren missed the chance to tie her husband in exposure to minors at the theater so her husband holds a 1-0 lead there. For now.

However, Lauren holds a 1-0 lead in being groped in public and also a 1-0 lead in groping someone else in public.

And she still holds the lead 1-0 in shooting neighbors dogs who wander into your yard for no good reason.

Apparently, the guy owns a LGBT+ drag friendly bar and is a democrat— the democrat thing is what is prohibiting the second date. I’m surprised it didn’t prevent the first. Or the make out session. @georgetakei Oh I agree about Fox News. They aren’t remotely fair and balanced, whatever that means in this context. They choose their stories just like every other network does. The difference is their editorial style is skewed to their audience. Their obligation is to tell the truth, tell the news of the day. But they don’t tell what happened from the pov of what happened. They tell what happened as their audience wants it to be, not how it is. So as to be reassured all is ok.

@georgetakei And believe me, I don’t need a pro tip. I was a broadcast communications major in college and understand the news biz backwards and forwards. The reason Fox became so big and MSNBC didn’t is because Murdoch cut a deal with the cable systems to get Fox News on a basic cable channel and get any liberal news organization pushed to the upper channels which had to be included in premium packages.

@georgetakei Whilst it may seem bad to weaponize #tech against #TechIlliterates at first, as #IT #Sysadmin I can assure everyone that the time and frustration saved by forcing #TechIlliterate relatives onto your tech stack is worth it!

@georgetakei Every time I visit my parents, I spend a few hours unsubscribing them from hundreds of Donald Trump email lists spreading fear and begging for money. And as an added favor, I add a few hundred domains to my mom's gmail blocking rules.

But it's like putting a finger into a dike when the dike is already overflowing and bursting: You can't stop the torrents of hate when there's just so much goddamned money in the business of spreading it.
