Canada: Sarah Ben Sabat was forced to quit her job after her boss told her she can’t wear a mask at work.

#COVID is one of the biggest worker safety and labor justice issues of our time. Where are the labor unions? Where is the left?

She says her boss told her she can’t wear a mask, so she quit

A Montreal restaurant worker says she was forced to quit after her boss told her she can’t wear a mask at work. The restaurant says it doesn't require workers to be mask-free, but the case raises questions about workers' rights and what constitutes a safe work environment.

@luckytran Sarah did the right thing 🔥

also, she is here on MASTODON 🤩 @Sarah_Ben_Sabat

@luckytran I have no trouble communicating when wearing a mask and also people seem to know when I am smiling, even small children. Weird.

@luckytran

Forcing a worker to take a mask off or quit is absolutely terrible.

That can happen to anyone of us.

She should have made her boss fire her. She would have been in a position to sue him and possibly to force him to settle to avoid negative publicity for his business.

@luckytran The left are doing what the left have always done: pursuing personal and partisan power for its own sake, just like Orwell told us they were doing.

@luckytran At the same time "No one wants to work anymore!" cry the same bosses.

I see the same thing in a lot of companies deciding that the "remote work experiment" (?!) is "over", only to find half their workforce quitting over the next year.

Every time I hear about worker shortages or supply chain issues, I just automatically change the phrases to "COVID". Shorter to write and far more accurate.🙄

#COVIDIsNotOver

@yohannon @luckytran I don’t disagree with crediting covid. But bad bosses are the centerpiece.
@luckytran if she wants to crowd fund legal options I’m very happy to donate. She should sue them into the ground and set the scene for more people to do the same. Then we need to take a class action against all the provinces.
@luckytran
Sarah is in the right. What is happening to this world when someone gets the sack for doing the sensible thing? She is protecting customers and herself from a very problematic illness. She should be getting an award for customer care not a dismissal.

@Melinda @luckytran

The problem is that almost nobody sees it that way. If employers did, certainly they'd be wearing a mask as well.

@GreySkies @luckytran
It's a weird, illogical mindset. Group pressure to conform to non-mask wearing does not work very well where covid is concerned.

I hope she was coughing like crazy the whole time she was quitting.
@luckytran What in the fresh hell is this? Someone hire her. Now.
@luckytran
The "left" - here in Australia, at least - has been bought out by Big Business. I'm not expecting anything from them for the foreseeable future. And then some.
#COVID19
@luckytran well, there's the left that is all talk and no real action because they mainly want people to think they're amazing but don't want to risk their portfolio dipping. And then then the left who would materially benefit from leftist policies are too busy trying desperately to survive the squeeze we're being put under to actively advocate for anything other than please don't let me become homeless this month
@luckytran so freedom to not wear one but not freedom to wear one? 🤦
@luckytran this is so upsetting and like the most hypocritical insane nonsense ever

@luckytran Does someone have to lose their job, get severely sick, or take a huge legal case to court before workplace safety regulations will protect people from these situations?

She is clearly wearing PPE in her workplace to protect herself from getting sick, which would affect her ability to work, make money, and live free from workplace hazards.

How is this not a blatant workplace safety violation?

@luckytran I had a recruiter send me a position where in the job description it said “the ability to smile at customers all day” so I replied and I asked if that meant I would not be allowed to wear a mask.

They replied and told me there were no Covid restrictions at all, so I said “do you mean no Covid protections? Yeah no thanks that didn’t actually answer my question. Or maybe it did.” Then I told them good luck finding someone willing to get airborne AIDS for a part-time job paying $15 an hour lol good luck.

Then I blocked them because I don’t even know why these people email me, my résumé has not been out there for years.
