I keep reading misconceptions about writing for @medium, which annoy me as a long-time subscriber and writer for that platform. To try to clear some things up:

- Authors can set for each story whether it is behind the paywall (and thus eligible for earnings) or not.

- Authors can share unlimited "friends links" to bypass the paywall.

- The subscription fee ($5/mo or $50/yr) gives unlimited access to all stories on Medium, plus a Mastodon account on me.dm.

I personally prefer to pay for content rather than look at ads. Many people use ad blockers, but I don't. If a site's ads annoy me, I just avoid that site.

Maybe this is a generational thing (I'm 53), but I think it shows entitlement to expect that all online content be freely available.
The things that I think should be free are food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare.

Anyway, if you still want to avoid Medium that's your business. I just want the facts known.

Update to this thread: Medium posted on their blog a few days ago some clarifications about the current state of their paywall and Partner Program options:

@funcrunch @medium @coachtony I still think that #Flattr, #Kachingle, #PayPal, #Patreon or just selling good work directly without #DRM (just let me pay via #SMS) is way more convenient.

@funcrunch @medium @coachtony
Cuz I hate #subscriptions and if I were to subscribe I want that mony to only go to tge person I'm subscribing and not accidentially benefit some hatesppech on the same platform by virtue of accidentially looking at it...

But that's just me who knows that #Ownership is only real if one's only restrictions are laws, not Terms of Service!

@kkarhan @medium @coachtony

I have a Patreon and accept tips on PayPal and Venmo as well, but hosting on Medium has given me far more reach than I got when I was only hosting a blog on my own website.

Understood about not wanting to support a platform that is OK with hate speech, which is why I'm not hosting on Substack.

@funcrunch @medium @coachtony again, I'm not telling you what to do - I've seen #Medium abused as well, because that's unavoidable with a platform open for anyone...

I'm just used to buying #DRM-free stuff to keep like my #eBooks...

@kkarhan @medium @coachtony

FWIW you can also set the licensing of a Medium story to Creative Commons or public domain.

@funcrunch @medium @coachtony Shure, tho #PublicDomain doesn't exist in my juristiction as one cannot surrender #Authorship, but to go back to #Monetarization:

I don't like #Paywalling but I can accept it if it's an actual #OneTimePurchase like my #eBooks.

It may be #watermarked amd #personalized to decentivize copying it but at the end of the day, I want to keep it #DRMfree...

@funcrunch @medium @coachtony this is why I hardly go to YouTube. I’m fine I have replaced my social media time with medium. And now it’s not time wasted but instead, very fulfilling.
