It was DeSantis who refused to meet Biden to tour areas damaged by Idalia. Yet the NYT reported it this way (first image) then had it up all night and morning before finallly correcting it to a less misleading headline (second image). Wording matters! Get it together, NYT...

h/t Chris D. Jackson for spotting and highlighting.

@georgetakei NYT is no longer fit to print.
@georgetakei The NYT is full of hacks. Idk if you have seen the NYT Pitchbot account, but it's hilarious
@georgetakei It's such a shame how their editorial choices have gone this direction.
@georgetakei The NYT used to be the paper of record, I suspect that title will pass on to another source because of all of the recent missteps the editorial content has embraced. Struggling for economic viability has diminished its moral compass
@georgetakei the new york times political coverage sucks and they publish every right wing talking point without a second thought

@georgetakei

The NYT is the ‘Paper of Record’ a broken record! They have supported Fascism both covertly and overtly. Wake up to their mendacity!

@georgetakei It is long past time that the New York Times be held accountable for their newsculpting operations. People like Maggie Haberman and Peter Baker don't get to mount their influence campaigns without the full complicity of the publication's editors and ownership.

#NewYorkTimes #propaganda

@georgetakei Are their editing processes that bad (believable) or is this deliberate (also believable)?

@georgetakei the NYT has always been right-wing. Let's dispense with this ahistorical nonsense that this is something new or novel.

https://www.vox.com/2015/2/11/8016017/ny-times-hitler

The New York Times’ first article about Hitler’s rise is absolutely stunning

Vox

@georgetakei

NYT is corporatist media-infotainment complex trash!

@georgetakei
The NYTimes once was but is no longer the paper of record.
@georgetakei they do this kind of shit purposely. Once your bias is confirmed, the correction becomes the lie.

@georgetakei

Ye. I canceled my subscription to the NYT after their reporting on the attacks on Paul Pelosi.

I don't miss them.

I substituted the WSJ's excellent journalism.
For the sake of my BP, I do have to avoid the WSJ opinion pieces, but opinion pieces are not what I read newspapers for.

@Edelruth @georgetakei really? A merdeoch rag? No thanks.

@georgetakei Sorry, didn't see this at first because of my _NYT_Filter_ (A thing I suggest everybody employ).

Makes me feel dirty just reading about it. Reminder: Headline writers are not writers.

@georgetakei

There really needs to be a "journalistic malpractice" tort.
@georgetakei Why do I think that this wording wasn't accidental?
@georgetakei Why I support the Guardian (which also doesn't bury articles behind a paywall)
@georgetakei
And the second one is not even accurate. They're not meeting bc DeSantis is refusing.

@georgetakei

Long time subscriber, but I totally gave up on NYT last year because even when their articles eventually get to the truth, their headlines are 100% designed as clickbait. They frequently spin toward the conservative story, too. I refuse to support them and will not even boost posts that cause readers to go to their website

@georgetakei This is what happens when you hire right wing political operatives as reporters for the sake of "balance."
@georgetakei NYT with the Republican friendly framing as always
@georgetakei
The NYT has turned into a Conservative rag that isn't with fretting over; I think the obits are the only worthy news it carries for thinking individuals.
@georgetakei we need to look at their mega-advertisers to see who really runs the NYT.

@georgetakei

Btw who cares...don't think Biden does. He came anyway.

@georgetakei I promise you this was intentional misinformation. @nytimes It is the NYT after all.

@georgetakei

The myth of the existence of liberal media, especially the NYT, continues.

@georgetakei Shoddy #journalism. Is there a #byline with that piece?
@georgetakei And they still couldn't frame it as "DeSantis won't meet Biden..."

@georgetakei
How about telling it like it is:

DeSantis Refuses to Meet With Biden During Tour of Hurricane Damage.

Quit beating around the bush and report the facts, NYT.

@georgetakei
This is an interesting conflict between dialects that use "won't" as "is unwilling to" vs. dialects that use "won't" as a simple negative future marker with no reference to intention.

@georgetakei The Times is a nightmare and they don't _want to_ get it together.

(See also now they're not just in bed with but actively driven by anti-trans agendas, boosting _proven_ lies as real.)

@georgetakei I cancelled my @NYT sun years ago. They couldn’t write Hillary Clinton without sneering. They have long backed the GOP fascists.
@georgetakei Unsubscribed for this sort of of crap

@georgetakei

The NYT helped Trump into office in 2016 and it looks like they're at it again.

@JamesGleick

@georgetakei the right one still feels disingenuous; feels like it's a mutual disdain. It needs to be the first headline but DeSantis and Biden swapped because THATS the reality.

@georgetakei
#AP did much better with their headline:

"Biden tells Idalia’s Florida victims ‘your nation has your back.’ DeSantis rejects meeting with him"

Biden tells Idalia's Florida victims 'your nation has your back.' DeSantis rejects meeting with him

President Joe Biden saw from the sky Hurricane Idalia’s impact across a swath of Florida before setting out on a walking tour of the city of Live Oak, which is recovering from the storm. Notably absent was any interaction with Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate. DeSantis suggested a meeting could hinder response efforts and did not accompany the Democratic president. Biden's federal disaster chief says her team and the governor's team “worked collectively” to agree on the area that Biden would visit. The mayor of Live Oak, east of the state capital of Tallahassee, thanked Biden and first lady Jill Biden for coming and “showing us that we’re important to you.”

AP News

@georgetakei

The NY Times is just lost as a news organization.

I realize that news stories can be approached in different ways, but to pretend that the lede in this story *isn’t* DeSantis’ insistence on acting like a spoiled two-year-old during a pro forma visit from the President of the United States takes spectacularly selective blindness.

@MollyNYC @georgetakei the NYT certainly has lost me. And MSNBC shouldn’t be entertaining us with them on TV.
@georgetakei It should have been corrected to “DeSantis refuses to meet Biden…..”
@georgetakei The New York Times is not your friend. This might be unpleasant to hear, but it is true.
@wagesj45 @georgetakei Most privileged celebrity liberals have MAJOR blind spots when it comes to anything bad that doesn't happen to be Republican.
@georgetakei fuck the fucking NYT. This is exactly why I canceled my subscription soon after Biden took office. Since then they have time and again reinforced my decision.
@georgetakei The same could be said about you!
@georgetakei @lisamelton When a paper tells you who they are believe them the first 10000 times
@georgetakei I think NYT doesn't serve the interests of the Republican faction directly, nor is it blindly applying a both-sides formula. I think the paper is serving the interests of media gossip moguls by angling for a close-run horse race through the (nearly ever-present) US election season.
@georgetakei Somebody is writing headlines for the right.
