I wish more people understood that being able-bodied is just a temporary condition...
@fribbledom liking this post as I'm trying to kneel on my kneeling chair with a back brace, in some amount of pain, just trying to work. Being 43. Ffs
@fribbledom we strive to make it last as most as possible.
@fribbledom being is just a temporary condition
@fribbledom "oh, you're able bodied? I'm so sorry to hear that. You know, there are doctors who could treat you for that..." :P
@fribbledom True. Being any-bodied is temporary.
@fribbledom Oh my, did you speak the truth!

@fribbledom

Very true. Even living is
temporary.

@fribbledom @lisamelton As an older person, I can attest that eventually they realize being able-bodied was (past tense) only temporary … if they don’t die first.
@fribbledom Unfortunately, that would require some degree of empathy and there seems to be a great number of humans that are incapable of that.
@fribbledom And when you try to do something good for your body, like, any type of exercise, you wreck a different part of your body.
@fribbledom I've recently broken my leg so I am feeling this today.

@fribbledom @Cassandra I’ve had luck introducing people to this concept in accessibility circles using hangovers as an example. A little humor and relatability helps.

Many able-bodied people have had the experience of going through their daily routine with reduced cognitive and motor ability this way. The temporariness has always been something they have bounced back from. Sports injuries and back pain are relatable inroads to not bouncing back.

@fribbledom you will never convince them that they’re a step away from being dependent on a health care and insurance system that concerns themselves with money not people. Those are the people who are adamantly opposed to Medicare for all. They think they’re somehow immune to age, disease, and trauma.
@fribbledom pretty sure “my body/other people are a proving ground for entrance to the good afterlife” registers with a lot of abelists

@fribbledom Yep. There I was, strong as an ox, cycled everywhere when my undiagnosed coagulation disorder decided to say hi with a bilateral pulmonary embolism followed by chronic arrhythmia.

On the plus side, when Covid hit I was able to explain to a few people why they should avoid getting a respiratory infection that comes with a side serving of blood clots.

@muesli Technically, everything is a temporary condition, including life 😉
@fribbledom it’d be nice if they could recognise that our brains are part of our bodies too, environmental factors are significant also, and that mental/emotional health difficulties are not a) merely imaginary b) a matter of virtue c) intentional d) failure to be ‘normal’
