I'm off to #Bergen to talk #RegionalClimateModels + specifically #HCLIM at the annual meeting of groups developing it. This time travelling by #CrossBorderRail - kind of. #NorwayFloods have caused all sorts of disruption to Norwegian rail, so I'm taking the other direction - a train to #Hirtshals + the ferry to Bergen.

I'm treating the long travel as a writing retreat as I have no fewer than 4 papers outstanding to work on.

The first train of many approaches...

Always a pleasure #Copenhagen - no ambiguity on whose side we're on.
#Ukraine

Now let's see how "Lyn"* this **lyntog to Aalborg actually is ...

#flyingLess #CrossBorderRail #TravelToHCLIM23

*(Lightning) **(lightning train - high speed rail, sort of)

Well the lightning train was indeed only lightningish, but perfectly on time, so it's on to train number 3, the local service from #Aalborg to Hjørring with the magic word #Skagen down the side... (Not much sign of the famous Skagen light today, perhaps we need to get closer). This is actually the second time I will be in sneezing distance of the famous tip of #Denmark and I *still* haven't managed to visit...

#FlyingLess #CrossBorderRail #TravelToHCLIM23

(and an update on those papers: paper 1 will shortly be sent round collaborators for their input, instructions for paper 2 just received from @Hansen_Nicolaj so my idea for an #amWriting trip seem to be paying off).
Skagen light. Probably.
#FlyingLessSeeingMore.
@Ruth_Mottram god tur! Will you take a night ferry to #Bergen?
@lavergnetho yes, I'm on my way to Hirtshals to catch the ferry now. I heard the Bergen -Oslo railway might not run so thought I'd try a new route!
@Ruth_Mottram sounds like a good idea. And hopefully you'll have fair sea for the journey.

And on to the final train of today hopefully - the local #NordjyskeBane again from #Hjørring to #Hirtshals, a pity it's diesel and not electric, but you can see that (allegedly) special North Jutland light again over the #train.

If my reading of the public transport app is correct I suspect the final stage to the ferry terminal is going to be annoying...
Let's see. #CrossborderRailTimeTableFail

And indeed. Shank's pony the last half hour to the ferry. Glad I only have a small rucksack.
Next time I'll bring a bike..

Edit: To be fair to #FjordLine: they do have a shuttlebus that connects in #Aalborg. But then I'd have missed North Jutland trains, perhaps next time..

End of part 1 of #TravelToHCLIM23. It's time to go and get settled on board folks, back online in Bergen tomorrow. Farewell from #Hirtshals

#CrossBorderRail

Arrival in #Bergen. The next stage of my #TravelToHCLIM23 is a short 10 minute walk to the tram..
Definitely more charming than the airport route..
#FlyingLess

Last train (?) of the #TravelToHCLIM23 trip is 5 mins on #Bergen's award winning light rail #Bybanen. Not sure if this is a tram or a train or a light rail or indeed what's the difference? Buying a ticket is simple as tapping your card.

On work front, this morning I sent a paper round co-authors, started writing a report, sent some urgent emails + prepared a presentation + discussion points for the #HCLIM workshop.
Interestingly I had internet + 5G most of the way.

@Ruth_Mottram Velkommen!

(It's a light rail and not a tram, as it has its own separate track mostly not shared with other road vehicles, and gets right of way in most cases. A tram is normally more on shared roads, and has lower average speeds. But the categories are human and therefore fuzzy.)

@Ruth_Mottram oh, that IS the proper expectation. Hope your crossing is smooth. Our kids often do the Hirtshals to Kristiansand route to visit Norwegian family.
@Ruth_Mottram even as an occasional visitor, I made it to Skagen. You should. You don't even have to like sild to go ;^)
