Notes to the folks who are scared that Trump's trial(s) will lead to violence by the white supremacists:

The white supremacists want you to be scared, and the white supremacists have already been violent on Trump's behalf.

Fuck the white supremacists. Fuck being scared.

#uspol

@scalzi also their plan is to continue to be violent *no matter what*.
@scalzi I'm way more scared of what will happen if we don't bring that grifter to justice.
@nancyjane @scalzi We need to be ready to defend ourselves.
@nancyjane @scalzi You don't really think he'll ever see any true consequences, do you? He's never been held accountable in his life, and the US "justice" system was specifically designed to insulate men like him from the consequences of their actions. They could indict him on a thousand counts of treason, and absolutely nothing will ever come of it. Except maybe launching him back into the White House for a second term.
@knottedthreads @scalzi well he sure as hell won't face any if no one tries to do something about him. It's long overdue but this time it might happen.
@nancyjane @scalzi Never happen. It's nice that the DoJ is at least going through the motions, but men like Trump never face consequences.
@knottedthreads @scalzi I went to law school. I've been watching how the system works and doesn't work for a long time. I think a handful of election officials are going to invoke the 14th Amendment and refuse to put him on the ballot. I think he'll get convicted in one or more of the cases. And I think the people he's relying on to spring him will write him off. I could be wrong. I often am. But this isn't a belief that the system is fair; it's a feeling that his grift is catching up with him.
@scalzi
Refusing to do something because you're afraid of someone else's reaction means they control you. If we let Trump get away with trying to steal an election because we're afraid of violence, democracy is already lost.
@VATVSLPR @scalzi It’s how Mussolini came to power. He threatened violence and the leaders caved in. Americans aren’t going to accept this type of takeover, too many guns on both sides.

@scalzi Threats of violence if you don't go along with them is one of the ways you know fascists are fascists.

@scalzi these white supremacists that want us to be scared should be considered to be the terrorists they actually are. They're the literal epitome of the definition of "terrorist" via their actions.

What they're doing is overtly designed to terrorize and intimidate.

And in conclusion, yes, fuck those guys. They make everything SUCK for everyone.

@scalzi If you let them do what they want because you're scared they get violent, then you give them permission to do everything they want.
And they will want only more cruel and horrifying things when they see they get away with it.

That's how you get death camps.

That's why you don't give in to terrorists.

@Yora @scalzi
We've had a couple of white supremacist murder sprees every year for years now, one as recently as Saturday. It's already happening.
@scalzi it is reasonable to be afraid of violence, but we are likely to experience violence in either outcome with significantly more if we do not pursue accountability.
@scalzi Appeasing to these domestic terrorists will not work. Bullies need to be put in their place before they are emboldened to take everything away you love. The only way to stand up to them is show them you are not afraid and will hit back harder.
@Wabbit @scalzi Right! Negotiating with terrorists for your own personal gain is for sociopaths like Trump, unable & unwilling to distinguish between right & wrong, and unable to not see an enemy in any American, who disagrees with him, but not in Taliban terrorists, he deemed beneficial to his hoped-for reelection in Nov 2020.

@scalzi

One way to beat a mad dog, is to be even more mad dog, one's self. That's worked for me twice in my life, once against a dog, and the other against a guy with a gun.

It doesn't guarantee you'll survive, but it gives you the best chance. If white supremacists want to come after us, they haven't paid close attention. They can FAFO until they really FO, for real.

In reality, they're garden variety bullies. We can defeat that.

@scalzi

“Don’t tell the violent fascist pricks to stop being violent fascist pricks - that might make them act like violent fascist pricks!”

@scalzi some of us lefties also understand violence! 🤬

@scalzi Those assclowns are also mistaken if they think none of us opposed to their racist, fascist BS are actually trained and know what we’re about when shit starts flying. I’m hardly the only vet who says “Not on my watch.”

In the immortal words of Theoden king: “Forth! And fear no darkness.” #uspol

@scalzi We're already seeing violence by white supremacists - every day that ends in 'y'.
@scalzi Why would anyone be scared??? They should really think about this “civil war” posture!! They should start by looking at the size and strength of each sides armies!! A bunch of rag tag militias versus the most powerful, organized, well equipped army in the world!!
@NeveranR @scalzi until they take control of it again....

@scalzi

Yeah, my fear of White Terror will have to get in line behind my fear of Totally Random Shooters.

@scalzi
Fortunately America has easy access to the solution to white supremacy.
@scalzi Let his supporters FA and FO. If we must build more prisons to hold every one that commits violence, worth it.
@scalzi They brought their best game on 1/6 and wasn't enough.
@scalzi
Dumps followers are just like Dump, all talk and no action. And to paraphrase myself, the one in ten that will take out his gun and kill, might happen, if his toddler has not found his gun hidden in the shoe box, and gone on a rampage offing his siblings, mother, first grade teacher, or any minority that happen to get in it’s sights
@scalzi LOCK HIM UP! Lock them up, too, if they prove that they deserve it
@scalzi .. there will be violence and they will be put down like their fake heros . We can only hope the US learns the importance of education, history and civics studies
@scalzi Fear is a perfectly reasonable reaction to the threat of violence towards you. But you need to just suck it up and do the thing anyhow because otherwise, they win by default

@scalzi The protests he hoped for at the indictments have largely fizzled.

I think the real punishment for J6+ the lack of help from Trump for any of it has reduced the number who believe him.

The problem is those who do are VERY invested.

I don't know what it will take to get them past the BS.

@InfamousUnkown @scalzi It's a cult. The robber-baron wing of the GOP specifically chose to cater to the wild-eyed Bible-thumper crowd because they're already primed to just mindlessly do what they're told by a man who claims to be speaking for God. These people don't even believe in observable reality. There's no way to break them out of this. The only choice we have is to keep them away from the means to do great harm. Cult-fervor bigotry + government power = disaster.

@scalzi I always go back to the 2000 election, GW Bush v Al Gore. The GOP talking heads on CNN saying outright that if you don't stop the recounts there would be civil war, therefore just say Bush won. The argument struck me as nothing more than "republican voters are a dangerous mob of authoritarian treason monkeys."

Not a very compelling argument if you ask me.

@scalzi

Hey, fighting the Nazi's is the American way! Fearing them is for the birds, make sure to report any suspected Nazi activity to the authorities!

It's awfully nice of them to give us nice targets to aim for too:

@scalzi their "power" is an illusion, conjured by weak minds to inspire fear. A desperate attempt at control.
@scalzi A democratic society that cannot, or will not, defend itself against groups like these is doomed. Freedoms are held by people who aggressively confront such threats. White supremacists are a bigger threat than China or Russia because they are on our soil. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/neo-nazis-repeatedly-targeted-jacksonville-before-mass-shooting/ar-AA1fTB5c

@scalzi for additional comfort, there is the fact that the most zealous of these assholes are also the least competent. They’re more likely to hurt selves or each other.
@shoq @scalzi Also, they're already in jail for 1/6.

@msbellows @shoq @scalzi

They haven't identified about a third of them still...

@mycroft @shoq @scalzi Ok, sure, but those others probably are still in jail anyway, but for domestic violence or child pron.
@scalzi The answer to violence is much simpler than the answer to general, free-floating bullshit.
@scalzi It's almost like there is a term for people who create violence for striking terror in a group...

@scalzi White Supremacists are just people who know they can't compete on a level playing field. They're not very clever and abject cowards unless they outnumber many to one or can attack you from behind.

Always remember that 'racial purity' is just a fancy term for 'inbred'.

@scalzi All we need to do is plant the seed of setting a trap for them. They'll stay home. They are too paranoid and see lefty danger everywhere.

Example: all of his arraignments/arrests. They stayed home because they thought lefties were setting traps for them.

Easy!

@scalzi How about instead of being scared of them we actually charge every single one of them for every single violent threat they've already made online, before they get a chance to carry them out?

Oh, what's that? Police can't actually do anything useful? 🤔

@scalzi I'm far more worried that Trump's trials will get them out to vote. The trials *are* his campaign, to paraphrase something I read.

@scalzi I think of it like if you have a puppy, it's gonna pee on the rug. There is nothing you can do to stop a puppy from peeing on the rug, but hope perseveres. The only way to keep your rug from being peed on is not having puppies in the house.

(with obvious apologies to dogs and puppies everywhere, but I needed something so reliably predictable as to match)

@scalzi If they're going to make a move, better that they do it now while Dems control the executive branch.

The Insurrection Act can cut both ways.

@scalzi that is incredibly true. The desperation is obvious as well. They placed all their chips on the board and lost the wager claiming they been cheated.

@scalzi Random acts of violence really do not benefit these extremists at all. For every citizen intimidated, there are many more motivated to turn against that movement.

However, threats against grand jury members are a very, very big deal. If juries in the upcoming trials have heard this stuff, even if 11 members are motivated to stand up to the extremists, one frightened juror can mean a hung jury. And claims of exoneration.

Don't think the provocateurs haven't thought of that.

@scalzi

There is only one rule and that is the rule of law.

Trump nor white supremacists are above it… and it seems they should find out the hard way.

@scalzi Plus, anyone thinking appeasement _at this point_, when the supremacists are barely getting started, should be all in for getting them shut down now now now.

They're only going to get more power mad and more scary.
