The folks that worked on this LEGO age check text field (!!) are automatically the best web developers on the planet right

(Sound on for perfection)

Does anybody out there know anybody at LEGO who might have worked on this?!

I'd love to learn more about it, and I'd also like to know why I can't find it again!! 😝

@cabel Many years ago they had a big team in NYC - my GF was an art director there. But they pulled everything back to Europe,my assumption is this was done in house. It was a great brand to work for as this sort of thing could get approved. Mary helped come up with ‘cool creations’, a pre-social network site feature where kids from around the world could share their projects.

@syncretist @cabel

I remember like a quarter century ago working with Critical Path Software here in Portland on a bid for a MacOS port of the Mindstorms CD-ROM because it was done in Macromedia Director. Didn't land it (and I think it may never have been ported) but that would have been so cool to do.

@cabel We have a number of web developers in our company in Denmark and a Lego chat in our slack. I posted a link to your video there. Hopefully that generates some leads!
@cabel when did you encounter this? I can ask on Teams 😅
@cabel I just accidentally stumbled upon it – it happens when you scan a QR code on the building instructions
@sageolson Oh yeah!! That’s what I did!!! Thank you!!!
@sageolson @cabel Control Center Code Scanner ❤️
@cabel I just happened to stumble upon this again. Looks like this URL gets to it every time: https://identity.lego.com/en-US/age
@cabel and to think I was pleased when the LL Bean website told me my password was “wicked strong”
@cabel I would use a word processor that worked like this.
@cabel Where is this on their site?! I tried to find it but gave up
@andybaio Hmm good question. I got to it when trying out the Lego Builder app… https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lego-builder/id1486159728

@cabel @andybaio it's different on the Android builder app.

@cabel

Can't argue with perfect, but it's be _even more perfect_ if it only used blocks and colors available at your birth year.

@mattdm @cabel that would be fun, but I don’t see it working: they don’t know your birth year until it’s too late

@freezombie @mattdm @cabel They know a possible span. =)

19** is built with ancient blocks but 2*** the 2 can be built with up to year 2000 blocks, 197* the 7 is built with up to 70s blocks and the last digit knows exactly what years are allowed.

@clacke @freezombie @cabel @mattdm

ISTR most of the extra colours of Lego blocks arrived around the 1980s and 1990s (I once saw a bar graph showing this) so it would be also possible to select an an expanded palette if "8" or "9" are entered...

@vfrmedia @clacke @cabel @mattdm you’ll still have to compromise for people that are older than LEGO of course
@cabel My first reaction: "some people have too much time on their hands". Second reaction: "imagine working for a company that PAYS you to have this much time on your hands!".
@cabel Or else they don't have enough to keep them busy.
@cabel When the UK Legoland theme park was being built in the 90s, they put mini construction workers made of Lego around the site, with different Lego tools and machines and so on. I was doing deliveries to the site for a few months so I could see them move around the different builds as it all progressed. Just a lovely sense of fun.
@cabel i love it so much this is great, i just hope they made sure it's still accessible
@luna @cabel So that's where the money goes.
@cabel what are the odds they got accessibility right too?
@Alexbbrown It's likely backed by a simple text or numeric input, so that when you click on the fancy graphical input, the text input gets focused. The graphical input can then be updated based on the value of the text one when the text one fires the `"input"` event.
@cabel Love it! My favorite part might be how the cursor is also just a tall brick.
@cabel that is excellent, thank you for sharing.
@cabel I certainly hope that fancy text field took accessibility into account 😅
@cabel Haha that's lovely!
@cabel this reminds me this meme:
@cabel This is cool! Never seen that before!
@cabel my god, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen
@cabel I can't imagine the arguments I'd have at work about how this was could possibly be ROI positive.
@cabel If not in-house my guess would be the agency North Kingdom. They have done some cool things for Lego through the years.
@cabel A+ for design and execution!
@cabel I would Explode if i had to program that. GG

@cabel

Honestly, NO. Websites should not add complication where it isn't necessary. Some people have shoddy connections. Some people have data caps, and they don't need to load several hundred KB or a few MB of data for a dumbass data entry box animation.

@cabel As lovely and on-brand as it is I can't help but wonder whether it's accessible and if so how much extra work that was...
@cabel this is both genius and pure horror
