This will be the nuclear moment for twitter. Every previous awful decision has been leading to this.

Note the account name being reported.

Note that twitter deemed that account acceptable.

Note that twitter specifically recommended blocking the account.

Note that Elon now plans to remove the block function from twitter.

See the problem?

@BrentToderian oh, man… it just gets worse and worse. 😢
@LauraJG @BrentToderian Well, if you're going to go Nazi, you might as well go all the way Nazi.
@BrentToderian Good grief! I just don't comprehend why people are still on that platform: are they too dumb or do they just not care?
In any case, it's a depressing state of affairs.

@eLearningTechie
The ones who stay stay for exactly what's going on. It's turning into a right-winged bigoted, weaponising platform. Some hang in there for 'followers' but will realise these will at some point mostly consist of, well, right-winged bigoted, weaponised arseholes.

@BrentToderian

@BrentToderian

Yep, I've noticed similar info on reports recently. Forced to consume misinfo, disinfo, and trolls by nature of non-existent "safety policies" unless you block like whack-a-mole. Soon, no way to block... Definitely nuclear.

@BrentToderian

Yes, abuse will be a problem. This is basically a first-level attempt to prevent ad-blocking. The filth that gets through will be left to moderation. That has always sucked on Twitter.

That account though, has been suspended for days

@staidwinnow @BrentToderian maybe they got "too many" reports and couldn't let it go. Maybe the original picture was fake, IDK.
@BrentToderian I bet the report feature doesn't work for quite some time. It just sends this automatic reply that everything is OK after some (maybe random) time to make the impression that somebody chcecked. I'm pretty sure nobody really checks the reports anymore, the people who did it were probably "too costly"...

@BrentToderian just read on BBC News that Jack Dorsey agrees:”Former Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, seemed to agree with Mr Musk's decision, posting: "100%. Mute only".”

I guess that may mean Bluesky will not have a block function either?

@Vosskah @BrentToderian BlueSky has one, at the moment at least.
@BrentToderian On top of that... he can't do that unless he buys both Google and Apple or have app delisted from both stores as they both require any app that has interaction between users to have Block feature available lol...
@BrentToderian that acct has since been suspended but no excuse for that report having been kicked out

@BrentToderian yeah. The problem is people still being on Twitter.

Look, Elon is going to turn it into a nazi hell hole more and more. There's no stopping that.

A lot of us are on mastodon because we didn't stick around, waiting for it to happen

@BrentToderian the problem is to continue to have open accounts there. Using it or not it's a contribution to the success of the shithole. let them talk to themselves. Lower them the numbers. Even nazis understand that language
@ramtamplam @BrentToderian I still have an account there. I haven't logged in for almost a year. The problem is to delete the account I would have to log in.
@acs @ramtamplam @BrentToderian Same here for 9 months. I do not really care about X myself, but for other people it is really bad to see networks melt away. What is puzzling to me is the role of Linda Yaccarino in all of this.
@BrentToderian It confirms what I thought. That account is acceptable but lesser language infringements get you permanently suspended... probably just if you are a leftist and environmentalist.

@BrentToderian This is just life in the new world of X

In almost any other context - posting child abuse content would immediately trigger involvement from authorities and permanent ban of the account.

On X - it'll get the offending post deleted, the account re-instated, and an apology from their CTO about the temporary suspension of said account.

Twitter Suspends, Then Unsuspends, Popular Right-Wing User Who Tweeted Image Of Child Sexual Abuse

The suspension drew allegations of censorship from right-wing users, while his reinstatement angered the left.

@BrentToderian

The problem is you are still using twitter. The writing has been on the wall for months now. Engaging with the site is being complicit at this point.

@BrentToderian Why are you tooting about the birdsite here? Unnecessary. I don't want to unfollow you but may have to if this nonsense continues. Please stop. 🙏

@sister_ratched In mastodon you can add words like Twitter to your filter list then you’ll never see posts with that word in it.

Dealing with unwanted content - Mastodon documentation

Control what you see, for a more comfortable social media experience.

@lil5 Yes, I've done that now, but it's actuality quite rare for 'twitter' to be used, there are so many other descriptors!

@BrentToderian
So, we're all going to be forced to listen to nazis?

Wonderful. I'm stoked.

@BrentToderian Seriously, I don't understand how major news agencies and advertisers continue to prop up this hate-filled POS site. They all should have left Musk to rot months ago, when it became apparent it was the Nazi and racist scumhole it is now.
@BrentToderian no policy is dumb enough to drive journalists off the site, though
@tommi @BrentToderian An unblockable tide of alt-right militants might get that job done.
@AntonPNym @BrentToderian Were you there? CAN WE SHARE YOUR STORY

@AntonPNym @tommi @BrentToderian IMO, it's an effort to force journalists &etc to subscribe.

Won't work the way he hopes, but that was the pitch.

@tommi @BrentToderian Journalists are the only reason Twitter has/had any relevance. Twitter always had far fewer users than FB and YT, but journos kept it alive and elevated its importance—for no good reason other than that they were on it.
@jdeseo @tommi @BrentToderian For all twitters flaws, there *is* good reason: other sites are not shaped to disseminate short form information the same way. Facebook is millions of disparate micro communities, and so is yt, though not as gated, and yt takes a lot longer to sift through (long videos vs a few lines of text) which makes it near impossible for journalists.
Short, dumb impulse comments you can quote are perfect to report on in a 15 min news cycle.

@nathanlonghair @jdeseo @BrentToderian Yes, it's the perfect tool for lazy, incompetent journalists. Why call anyone or research topics, when you can just scroll until you find your next inane story.

They will take any amount of abuse if they still get to not work.

@nathanlonghair @tommi @BrentToderian Twitter was good for hosting community convos and finding leads, but reporters still had to follow through. Sadly, tweets themselves became the news story. Now journos can’t see forest for the trees, and dumb impulse tweets have only gotten deliberately dumber. RIP Twitter, RIP journalism.
@BrentToderian It truly is. The only way to manage Twitter is by having filters and blocks in place so if he's really going to do this then many, many people will leave. I live in what maybe a fond hope that one day, when he's run it totally into the ground, some vaguely sensible company like Automattic will buy it.
@BrentToderian for fuck sakes.
Tell that to targets of mass online harassment, like my friend.
Block is handy, but it's now useless because muskrat fucked with the site verification and made it easier to bot and mass report users for no reason.
@BrentToderian It's funny - I was listening to a pod this morning where they were talking about how #Threads jumped the gun - they wanted to rush out early with a non-ready product to take advantage of a really bad #Twitter / #X moment, but they could easily have waited, knowing the next really bad moment would come soon enough. And here it is.

@BrentToderian

⬆️ I feel more affirmed that leaving BirdChan last year was the best decision I made in 2022.

@BrentToderian I think this is going to actually get us off that platform.
@BrentToderian If it works out as we all expect then I'll probably be one who closes their account. I spend far more time here already.
@BrentToderian He spent $44b on alienating it's users and pay $8 a month for the privilege. Mass exodus, anyone?

@BrentToderian

Mastodon servers firing up extra capacity....

@BrentToderian And except for Musk himself probably. He blocked some people there in the past as well.
@BrentToderian Not seeing this on EMs feed. Did he delete it already?
@BrentToderian Every day he validates my decision to delete my account.

@BrentToderian Surely that would be likely to result in Apple dropping the app from the app store?

Some years ago I built a dating app for a client and it was rejected for lacking the ability to both block and report users. The criteria would cover social media apps too. Unless Apple were willing to make an exception to their rules, which isn't unknown.

@BrentToderian the macroscopic cross-section of absorption just got very large. I hear you.
@BrentToderian totally agree. It’s a full dumpster fire now.

@BrentToderian Yeah- Elon just lit the final bomb to destroy twitter.

Hope more of the many scientists/activists will migrate & start to use Mastodon more.

@BrentToderian I've been following you for years on what was twitter. Thanks for all the inspiring content. But twitter doesn't exist any more, and I don't want to be part of X. For me the future is on Mastodon.
