The genuine confusion you feel when almost the entire world loves #LoveBetweenFairyandDevil and you detest it to the depths of your very being. 😆 🙃
But that's par the course for me - I tend to dislike very popular dramas. Disliked Ashes of Love too. Two things are deal breakers for me: An infantile female lead & terrible acting.
When you have both together, well, that show doesn't stand a chance with me lol.

#Cdrama #Cdramas #TV #China

@liztai (in Ashes of love there is a reason for that infantile Acting. The character is a child in the beginning and there is some magic involved. But it's totally fine not to enjoy a Drama. I just wanted to clear up that it's not done to set up a stereotype or to gain a certain audience)
@bookstardust yea I get the reason. But the acting wasn't good enough. For eg, I didn't mind Xuan J's (Love and Redemption) childishness because she was a better actress.
@liztai yeeeeaaah, that's fair. In the end I think the Phoenix was more lacking but because of not so good script writing. I just love the story, since I have such nostalgic love for the novel. The Novel was just pure perfect. So I still like the drama.
@liztai
TIL that #MyDramaList has a "not interested" category. Sounds like another one to add to my list, thanks!
@EllenInEdmonton I don't know, LBFAD seems to be very polarising. Some really adore it, some really hate it. I think it really depends on your personal preferences. I have a very certain taste and they often don't come together for popular shows. So, try it! You may love it.
@liztai
As you said, "an infantile female lead & terrible acting.
When you have both together, well, that show doesn't stand a chance with me lol."
Same, sister!!
@EllenInEdmonton haha can't fight with you on this one lol. The love for the show was frankly puzzling to me.

@liztai @EllenInEdmonton
I've watched some of it, and I mostly am meh/vaguely curious about where it's going.

So far, the best part was the temporary role/body switch -- which like, in general, having a reason to have one actor act like another character in the same show, from possession to body switching, is an entire category of tropes I like.

Plus the subversion in both of the actors playing opposite their char's design.

I kinda would have liked that to have been more of the show overall.

@glitchontwitch @EllenInEdmonton TBH those scenes turned me off because I felt like the actors didn't play it well. But yeah, the whole show just didn't work for me, though more power to those who love it.

@liztai @EllenInEdmonton Oh, to clarify, I didn't say it had to be *well acted* for me to like that set of tropes. It's just one of those I like, and admittedly even when it's done poorly. (Though when it's done great it's even better.)

And in this context, it was more like: the characters were more interesting to me when swapped.

And I had, in the moment, hoped they'd do something interesting with that. But it was dropped real fast. Before they could even confuse other chars!

@liztai

Ex: I had imagined, maybe even, an arc where he had to pretend to be her, and how he would handle the casual mistreatment she experienced from some of the people back home.

Meanwhile, her having to actively evade the guy she has a crush on, because he's convinced she's the enemy.

Would have been more interesting (to me, ymmv) than what we got when they returned.

@liztai I don't watch #cdrama because there's too much hypocrisy and censorship. You won't ever see a show highlighting a true issue or giving a bad image of Chinese society. On top of that the language doesn't really click with me. It reminds me too much of the way I talk after I get anesthesia from my dentist 😄
@s1m0n4 I am not sure if you are aware that I speak Mandarin and it's not good form to make fun of a person's language 😐 But I will give you a pass that you don't like CDramas and that's fine. Tho I sense some China dislike in there too.
Chinese dramas show the imperfection in their society all the time. But it is subtle. Believe me, I have watched CDramas since the 80s.

@liztai I didn't know that you speak Mandarin.

If I were to rewrite my toot, I'd remove the emoticon, a bit too insensitive from me, but I won't apologize for expressing my personal taste about a language. I don't like Russian either, for instance. It's too harsh.

Also I do acknowledge my dislike for the Chinese government.

When it comes to c-dramas if the critics are too subtle then they are destined to a domestic market, since not everyone can understand that.

@s1m0n4 @liztai okay, but then, why don't you move on?
I don't like the US government either, I do not go and complain about Hollywood movies all the time?

Don't be racist.

@bookstardust @liztai if you were to complain about Hollywood movies you'd be entitled to do so. It's called freedom of speech. Racism happens instead when someone manifests hate towards a given ethnicity. I haven't done that.
@s1m0n4 @liztai I think you have been quite particular when you talk about your dislike of the chinese language, Chinese TV culture to a person of chinese ethnicity.
@bookstardust @liztai speaking Mandarin doesn't imply that she is from Chinese ethnicity. She's Malaysian as far as her profile tells.
Or are you perhaps inferring that all Asians are Chinese? Because that would be extremely racist.
I dislike those tv shows because of the degree of censorship they are going through. I've seen a couple and the propaganda is well perceived by an external viewer. This constitutes a legitimate reason that has nothing to do with the people belonging to that ethnicity
@s1m0n4 @bookstardust well, I am Chinese. There are many Chinese people in Malaysia as we are made of many races. I think this conversation has gotten off track. Your dislike for anything related to China has been made clear. Let's move on.

@s1m0n4 @liztai maybe you research the history of the country first, because you have to assume that people who speak mandarin in malaysia might be of chinese descent.

I don't mind you not being okay with the chinese censorship, I am not either. I do not mind you not liking the chinese language. However, every art and media is a way for people to express themselves. As chinese are oppressed they try to create media within an oppressed system. This is what C-Novels and Dramas do.

@s1m0n4 @liztai you do not have to watch them. You do not have to like them. But for chinese and the people who have grown up with that media it is an important part of their expression. It is not created for western audience. And the people for whom those shows are made are able to decode the propaganda and the subtle criticism.

So with what purpose did you leave that comment? What was your point to the other person? Should she feel bad for watching those shows?

@s1m0n4 @bookstardust @liztai Propaganda is always visible to an external viewer if you watch any content in any language. Does hollywood movies show Russia or China in a positive way? As a neutral person from a non aligned country I can tell you that the content is often overly biased against them. Shows in my country have propaganda too. It is visible to me as an internal viewer also. Art is a tool and artists and their patrons use it to sell their political ideas. It is nothing new and is the case everywhere.

@liztai Perhaps you might like "The Legend of Zhouhua" that is currently airing? The female lead is clever and does not have a squeaky voice. The male lead is powerful but not infallible so they complement each other. Based on trailers it also looks as if he is not the possessive type and is willing to forego marriage so she can have a career.

@Sollenbum I am waiting to see if it has a good ending 👀
@liztai Ah, yes ... I forgot that you do that 🌸 So far it is very good, though.
@Sollenbum I suspect that it will be good thanks the directing pedigree. Let's hope it doesn't lean into the tragedy 😅
