Sculpture production has begun
Coming together
This is 60/121 flat panels. The whole thing goes together with no forming or instructions, just the panels and a rivet gun. This took a little less than 6 hours.
On the final stretch of assembly. 25 panels left
It’s complete! I’ve been working on this idea for 5 years and it’s finally done.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Check out the previous one we did in wood and stay tuned for a more in-depth write up on the design and fabrication once this is installed

Yellow Moon Gyroid

Yellow moon gyroid is a sculpture we created to honor the work of mathematician Alan Schoen. It is now permanently installed at the Morris Library of Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondal…

@nervous_jesse

these are gorgeous. I especially like the way the plywood one glows warmly!!!

@nervous_jesse TIL that *butterfly wings* are metamaterials
@nervous_jesse Congrats! It looks amazing 🙌🏼
@nervous_jesse I can't help but imagine Ivy or some other climbing plant over this sculpture. That would elevate this to another level. ( Heck like it's not on another level already)
@nervous_jesse WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT? I CANNOT FINISH SEEING THE SCULPTURE, IT IS UNENDING!
@nervous_jesse I now need a slo-mo vid walking around this, just to understand the shapes...
@nervous_jesse so how many dimensions did you unfold that from, and do you plan to re-fold it back into an intelligent proton when you're done inscribing it?
@EMR the panel design does in fact involve projecting the whole shape into 8 dimensional space
@nervous_jesse Huge and very cool. Great piece of mathematical art
@nervous_jesse well thats a mighty nice... Thingamading that you got there...

@nervous_jesse Mine is a big bugged but I made it thanks to an article I found I can't remember where ...

Or is that another minimal surface ?

@gilesgoat well I can’t quite tell what that is since like you said it is bugged. The sculpture shape is a gyroid minimal surface
@nervous_jesse what is represented ?? It looks nice, but I guess it is some sort of equation or something ?
@tinylittleenormous the shape is a gyroid minimal surface, discovered by Alan Schoen https://schoengeometry.com/e-tpms.html
Alan Schoen geometry

@nervous_jesse Congrats! It looks amazing. 😍
@nervous_jesse Neato. Is this one of Alan Schoen's minimal surfaces?
@jef it is! It’s a gyroid. Sadly he just passed. We will dedicate the piece in his memory
@nervous_jesse Did you ever see the even larger version at the Exploratorium in SF? I think the wooden one has now been replaced by a plastic one.
@nervous_jesse ah W.OW. that is A-mazing 🔥 sharing with my mathematician peeps
@nervous_jesse congratulations! It looks fantastic!
@nervous_jesse Congratulations! That's a fantastic continuous surface.
@nervous_jesse a representation of a Hilbert space or the quantum manifold space and time arise from ?
@MishaVanMollusq the shape is a gyroid minimal surface. We will make a post about the whole design and process once it’s installed
@nervous_jesse this is super cool, it reminds me of coral! Was there an underlying inspiration or plan here?
@tedmielczarek you can read about a similar piece here, though the panelization and construction is a bit different https://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=9176

@nervous_jesse
It's awesome.
You shouldn't need me or anyone else telling you that,
but we're gonna say it anyway.
@nervous_jesse it looks like some kind of giant bryozoan. The giant bryozoan that ate Manhattan, maybe.
@llewelly yes! Bryozoans we’re definitely one of the inspirations, especially for the directionality of the pattern
@nervous_jesse That is beautifully amazing! Love it!
@nervous_jesse
amazing!! I'm so curious about how you actually fabricated this!
@nomi we’ll do a long write up once it’s installed
@nervous_jesse Fantastic work!! Exploring cats will also find it awe-inspiring.
@nervous_jesse This was your birthright to create. Your manifold destiny.
@nervous_jesse The tragic final photo before he was interdimensionally swallowed by his own creation
@nervous_jesse Scrolling past a boost of this post, and not knowing you by name, I immediately thought, "wow that looks like something from Nervous System," because one of my favorite pieces of jewelry is a ring I got at least 10 years ago (I want to say I bought it directly from your co-founder at an art/craft fair type event...?). I've gotten so many compliments on that ring over all these years. So glad to see you're still making amazing things!
@6x6pix cool! We used to do a lot of craft fairs, but not for many years.
@nervous_jesse This is stunning 🤩 Absolutely love it!
@nervous_jesse That's one heck of a waste basket.
