I don't know if I am hallucinating this, or what, but I distinctly remember Microsoft doing two releases of old movie sound samples on sets of 3.5" floppies in the early 90s? 🤔 I can't find any reference to it on the intarwebs. I'm confident it pre-dates CD-ROMs.

@welshtroll @codinghorror That catalog sent a massive wave of nostalgia through me, a sudden flash of deeply and profoundly missing the nineties.
@welshtroll YES! THANK YOU! This was incredibly hard to find! 🙇
@codinghorror @welshtroll absolutely wild. I miss Microsoft shipping odd software like this.
@codinghorror No worries.
I remembered spotting some Microsoft Catalogues had been uploaded a while back so thought it worth a check.
I least you didn't imagine it all.
@welshtroll @codinghorror $25 in past money for glorified ringtones? What a racket
@petes_bread_eqn_xls @welshtroll tell me about it...
@codinghorror @petes_bread_eqn_xls @welshtroll Well, maybe not so wild when you realize that they has to license Fred Flinstone!
I mean, his signature yells can't be cheap.
And you'll hear it in your head all day and I haven't written it down.
You know his legendary scream in your bones!
25 bucks? For having your Windows PC make you hear Fred Flinstone whenever you minimize a window?
Let's be honest.
Priceless.
Microsoft SoundBits 1.0

@codinghorror 🤯 the dream!
@welshtroll thank you for helping me excavate this archaeologic dig site lol 🤣

@codinghorror All I remember is this .wav file of Lt. Worf saying "It is a good day to die."

You could select this as an alternate sound in Windows 95 when a fatal error crashed the system. Does it get any better than this?

@sontag https://penaltykickonline.com I felt it would be worth a look as I had seen several Microsoft Catalogues had been posted previously.

@codinghorror pre-dating CD-ROMS would put you in the very early 90’s. IIRC Windows NT 3.1 and Windows 95 both had a CD-ROM option (although I installed both many times from floppies).
