With the stroke of their pens, six unelected Supreme Court justices blocked student debt relief, ended affirmative action, and made it easier to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people

What happened to the belief that the Supreme Court had no role in legislating?

@rbreich
What happened to conservatives railing against activist judges?
@rbreich what happened πŸ€”πŸ‘‡

@voron @rbreich Yes, if Clarence Thomas really did live like a billionaire on someone else's dime, he ought to be up on articles of impeachment.
@mike805 @rbreich yup & trump should have been impeached but….

@voron @rbreich I seem to recall Trump getting impeached twice. Once after he was out of office, which was the most absurd bit of political theater since the Vatican put a corpse on trial.

Oh yeah, while they were busy impeaching him the first time, COVID was really getting a foothold in the USA and the health authorities were saying No Big Deal.

Moral of the story: don't impeach what you cannot convict. It's not intended as political theater.

@rbreich @mike805 exactly my point πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
@rbreich I certainly understand, and feel, the frustration myself. However, I would argue the exact same thing could be said about many eras of the Court. The Warren Court springs to mind regarding legislation and the bench. The Court has always been political and will always continue to be so.
@KI5FGS @rbreich Unfortunately, the American system is very politicized at every level.
@rbreich Yes but that was for them... and what they wanted... so it's okay but if that were to be flipped then it's a travesty
@rbreich had a mild fright while misreading the sixth word

@rbreich
Hitler and the Nazis knew they needed to control the courts if they were going to raise their Third Reich.

#Republicans and the #FederalistSociety has funneled billions over the past few decades to do the same.

The Nazis did it in about six months.

@bigheadtales @rbreich

@rbreich the Supreme Court, whose conservative majority is under fire for accepting what appear to be bribes from billionaire benefactors…
@rbreich I totally misread that first part. πŸ˜…
@rbreich It went with the idea that the Supreme Court should be an ethical body that doesn't take bribes, er, "gifts" from billionaires that could be a conflict of interest.

@rbreich Are people seeing this craziness? It is as if the progress the world has made over many decades is being attacked while people sleep.

@rbreich

The reality is The United States is a shithole country.

@rbreich The Republicans were only upset when court decisions didn't favor their own selfish interests. They characterized the normal administration of justice as legislating from the bench. They tortured the truth and used the lie as campaign fodder aimed at their ignorant base. By the way, this is not so different from their use of the nonsensical doctrine of originalism. They like these things as shortcuts to getting the result they want, rather like their extensive use of gerrymandering.
@rbreich! The #FailedRobertsCourt is now LEGISLATING FROM THE BENCH! It has zero credibility! #Roberts must go! #Politics
@rbreich The 'activist' court, which must be stopped, only exists if it allows for human rights and dignity. Anything that improves the road for corporations, financial interests, power or wealth is certainly not activist, doncha know?
@rbreich it went out the window along with stare decisis
@rbreich but it’s only legislating when liberals do it!
@rbreich it's only "judicial activism" or "legislating from the bench" when it's a progressive/liberal policy. If its reactionary/conservative then its "originalism".
@rbreich What happened? Republicans got six of their operatives onto the bench, leaving only three Americans. That’s what happened.
@rbreich
Supreme Court Justices should have term limits.

@rbreich When they legalized abortion and redrew voting districts, Leftists loved them for it and the Right hated them for it.

When they threw abortion back to the states and banned affirmative action, Leftists hated them for it and the Right loved them.

Nobody has a principled position here (judges should not legislate.)

The reason judges have that power is the politicians don't want to decide those issues. They know either choice will make half the nation hate them. So leave it for judges.

@rbreich Unelected, but very well paid-up
@rbreich
Time for a clear out.

@kennethb @rbreich

Congress has set the number of Justices from 5 to ten, up and down, every number but 8. Roosevelt wanted 14 because the Court had too many men over 70 on it.

Now, its stacked with bribed liars.

@rbreich Just been kicked out of Twitter. Nice to see you here!
@rbreich I mean, if they're going to legislate, then we should be able to vote for or against them.
@rbreich @scsupremecourt can the congress impeach Thomas?
@rbreich why would we elect Supreme Court justices? Have you even read the Constitution??
