Unleash the potential of your phone: Rooting your device does not void its warranty - FSFE

As users we sometimes face the issue of rooting our devices. We may want to regain control of our device or we may want to keep using a device with an outd...

FSFE - Free Software Foundation Europe
@fsfe Which is a pretty cool thing in terms of consumer rights, that said these days there's a new issue that popped up: Banking applications required for online-banking also requiring OS attestation / non-rooting.
(And it's bank dependent, so "works for me" → 🚮️)
@lanodan @fsfe to be fair, I use a few of the supposedly harshest ones and they never complained to me other than one of them deciding using my fingerprint reader for unlocking was unsafe
@lanodan @fsfe I only use the online banking website on my smartphone because I generally only want FLOSS apps on my smartphone.
@mark22k @lanodan @fsfe That's why I never started to add my phone to the banking chain. Chose a dedicated 2FA device for that instead 👍🏼
@mark22k @lanodan @fsfe
I use push TAN as authentification. I don't see another method just as safe and practical. Push TAN App only works on non-rooted phone, so if I rooted mine I'd be forced to use one of these super shitty TAN generator devices so I can do online banking at all.

@kleines_z @lanodan @fsfe One of the things I don't understand either: why don't banks use a standard like TOTP or HOTP?

I have one of these devices myself. As long as the Push TAN app doesn't appear in F-Droid, it won't come to my smartphone.

@mark22k @lanodan @fsfe
My bank doesn't offer that as far as I know.
@fsfe first links points to 404
@fsfe when it was said i can root and force block updates on my shitsung? all family thinks i will lose warranty just after going to developer options (what i did anyway) and where root/boot unlock…
@fsfe the only thing Android is missing is sudo, so we wouldn't need to give up safety while "rooting".
@fsfe rooting? if rooting then modding. and if modding then you need to know how. here i made some tutorial ages ago and still sits on my blog if someone'd want: https://hacknorris.neocities.org/#fourth
(if site opens at top you can click on link to tutorial in menu, it just scrolls cause all my blog is in one page)
The web site of hacknorris

@hacknorris @fsfe thanks for the link, I think I'll make use of it

Too many working devices are left to collect dust or thrown away because they don’t support the latest version of the OS and key commercial applications. The ability to root the device and install a simple but well maintained open source OS is a huge step forward.

@fsfe

@fsfe now I need to dig up my iPhone 4…
@fsfe very good thing, but Samsung
still using fcking KNOX...
Dear Samsung, maybe I want to check your ecosystem, but I need to root my Galaxy S9 cuz this phone working ver short like without battery and I need to tweak some things to can use him at least half a day
@fsfe modern phones have the bootloader locked from the mainboard, it was the standard for Chinese produced but now is becoming unavoidable
@fsfe another brexshit benefit!!
@fsfe i wasn't aware of this, thanks!
