I have returned from my wife's family's annual reunion and I am full of every possible chicken dish, banana pudding with Nilla wafers, and lard cake, which I assure you is far better than it sounds.
@scalzi Lard is good for you. This message brought to you by The Lard Council™️

My grandma taught me to make pie crust with lard. I make maybe two pies a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas, so it won't kill me right away, and, damn, it's flaky. (Well, 3, but the lemon meringue for Easter has graham cracker crust.)
@scalzi I could absolutely go for some banana pudding.

@scalzi that sounds like a sunday spent spectacularly well.

(and zero doubt on lard cake – an old guy in the village here (.de) used to bake his cheesecake with lard, and it was the best cheesecake ever)

@scalzi Oh, I love me some banana pudding. Growing up in eastern Ohio, we’d have ham loaf for special dinners. So good… mmmmmm….
@scalzi could it maybe have been buttermilk pie?
@scalzi In California we have a town named Lard! Well, Manteca.
@jef I drove past it on the 99 whenever I went to Sacramento!
@scalzi is your wife from the Midwest, by any chance? That sounds so much like the food I grew up eating at potlucks. 🥘
@lydiaschoch We're in Ohio so this checks out
@scalzi the power of lard...
@scalzi so you’re going to sleep for the next 34 hours?

@scalzi

I look forward to the horrid Burrito picture you will inflict on us that contains leftovers from your gluttonous feasting

no not really

@scalzi My native St. Louis has a gooey butter cake that is also better than it … no, wait, that sounds amazing too.
@scalzi I have a recipe for “Jenny’s Cookies” from a great-great aunt or something that starts with a large amount of lard. Made ‘em once. They were delicious!
@scalzi I have t had banana pudding with Nilla wafers in forever. Time to go shopping!
@scalzi haven't had a nanner/nilla dish in ages...   I need a midwest summer fete STAT
