Couldn't bear the idea of Musk's Mark on my phone so before the Twitter app could update from the bird I deleted it entirely. I can still access that particular microblogging site off a browser when I need to. It's a thing to have such a visceral reaction to branding, but, well, here we are.
@scalzi imagine creating a brand everyone hates right from the get go, truly a 'business genius' for the Ages!
@Lazarou @scalzi and after belly-flopping with it once before, too!
@scalzi very same. I snarl even when I see it as the loading icon in the browser.
@scalzi "branding" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, considering the new Mark is essentially a fancified letter of the alphabet.
@pjohanneson @scalzi If you have enough money you can buy the moon
@scalzi Been thinking about doing the same, honestly.
@jaedia @scalzi because I can’t control the phone app the same way I can the browser version and I realized the phone app forced to to experience the negative aspects of the place far more often due to that lack of control I had deleted it from my phone about a two weeks before. Now it’ll never go back. One good thing - by having it off my phone I am more likely to engage with the other networks I am trying to get used to using because they are on the phone.
@scalzi Congrats on weaning yourself, and thank you for leading me here. I was never on that other site, but I really like this community.
@scalzi Absolutely the same, visceral response. (the switchover was a blessing insofar it pushed me to actually leave).
@scalzi The damned thing about this fiasco that infuriates me is in spite of Elmo Muskrat firing thousands of employees, wasting billions of dollars, and destroying an invaluable public resource, Elmo is still a goddamned billionaire. It's exhausting seeing oligarchs repeatedly escape accountability at our expense.
@scalzi just leave and stop supporting the Nazis.
@scalzi That CSAM fiasco on the former bird site has given me a visceral β€œEw!!!” reaction that really removes the temptation to go back.
@scalzi It's the universally-understood icon for "close window".

@scalzi same. I'll still need to check it regularly due to some business stuff going on there, but otherwise? I don't need that on my phone.

It looks like the sort of branding you'd get from a cheesy strip club in a seedy part of town or something.

@scalzi I continued to visit Twitter for a while, just to watch the collapse. But now, even that's gotten boring.

@scalzi Yeah the latest bullshit finally prompted me to delete my account permanently.

Truly the end of an era.

@scalzi hideous icon. Time to go!
@scalzi The old tweetdeck website is working again and that hasn't had any changes for the new branding which makes it slightly more tolerable.
@scalzi Makes perfect sense. I did the same thing when he took the reins. Kind of wish I could delete it again now.
@scalzi this aversion is our first slide into William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition book.
I noticed it for the first time only a few moments ago and had the same reaction. Something weirdly and overtly aggressive about the logo. I am not sure I would have ever installed "X".
@fnord @scalzi I didn't heretofore realize how much of it's appeal was "aww cute lil bird"
To me at least.
@scalzi Cayce Pollard from Pattern Recognition vibes.
@armchairdj @scalzi Would that make Musk Hubertus Bigend, but sorta clueless?
@pjohanneson @scalzi What was Bigend but a warning to all of us about the coming of the Tech Bro?
@armchairdj @scalzi Oh, absolutely. Willie G (as my sisters and wife insist on calling him) knew what was coming.
@scalzi You can do anything at zombo.com. Anything!

@scalzi I don't allow automatic updates on my Android phone, so I still have the blue bird, but I noticed that Play has X. It took them a couple of days.

Just the same, I've pushed the app icon from my front page to the last page, just to discourage myself.

@scalzi I just pictured William Gibson’s cool hunting character Cayce Pollard barfing on the new logo
@scalzi I have Elon Musk's porn marker, the app updated today, but Google Play hasn't recorded any update for over a week.
@scalzi I removed the app as well, but after it changed. Eww that is ugly.

@scalzi Yeah, I started the process for an archive download but did retweet something when I opened the app to do so. So I guess a 90s Star Wars game retweet will be my final legacy there :P

Though I just realized that, once Twitter and "tweets" are gone, we might be able to genericize the verb, and "tweet" can be a platform-agnostic noun for a microblog post (and also the verb for posting one). I guess we'll see how that goes.

@scalzi I highly recommend the Chrome & Firefox extension β€œControl Panel for Twitter,” which makes the web-browser bird app experience usable. No trends, no ads, tweets from only those you follow in reverse chronological order. It’s great. I’ll be deleting the mobile app too.
@SazeracLA I already have that and it's been super-useful.
@scalzi Excellent! I wish I had known about it before this week.
@scalzi I created a different shortcut that looks like a much older version of the icon, just as my own personal protest. Doesn't change the stupid loading screen though
@scalzi God, I just hate him so much. I will never forgive him for ruining the place I happily hung out for an entire decade.
@scalzi I deleted the app shortly after he bought it and have been slowly backing off using it since then, but the brand change gives me enough of an "ew" reaction that I'm pretty much not even using the browser version anymore. What a business genius. Remarkable.
@scalzi Deleting twitter from my phone in April was very liberating... no regrets. Abandoning it as a place I interact with in June was much easier. Bsky and Mastodon more than fill that space.
@scalzi
There's a Chrome extension that takes the stupid "X" out of the browser site and puts the bird back, if you're interested.
@pmbAustin I have it! I'm still cutting back on use, though.
@scalzi I deleted mine a few days ago. it's sad. I loved Twitter until the change is ownership.
@scalzi When he finally manages to do it, that’s when I delete my accounts and the app. Good riddance.
@scalzi I'm so glad I got out when I could. I know it's been a much harder call for folks that depend on it for business
@scalzi My app got updated overnight and I immediately deactivated my account and uninstalled. Dumb looking X on a black background is ominous, not cool.
@scalzi I have the same ominous feeling seeing the x logo as I do seeing a swastika
@scalzi We should really be able to change the icons used for app shortcuts on phones – a feature that Windows, hate it or hate it, has had forever
@scalzi he is going to update the logo and name on the app and a very large. Umber of users who are not as online as we are are going to think they have been hacked and their Twitter account was stolen
@scalzi thanks for the nudge; uninstalled.
@scalzi when the update hit today I gagged then installed through gag-tears
@scalzi I did the same, and permanently deleted my Twitter account to boot. I have grown tired of this billionaire man-child's antics.
@scalzi I still have the app on my phone but haven’t updated it since January
@scalzi Its dumb but it does not bother me as much. I wish that was its biggest problem.
@scalzi SAME. I just looked at it and it made me sad. I don't want to be sad.
@scalzi
The X is for X-crement.

@scalzi if you're on Android, you could always do custom icons.

but yeah, less twitter is the better solution.

@scalzi I didn't realize the change was upon us. Just went today to reply to something you (or maybe T. Kingfisher) had posted on Twitter and I couldn't find the app. And the notification was under X instead of twitter. My garmin watch still shows the twitter bird when the notificatoin shows up, though. lol
