Sad to see people fleeing the sinking ship of XTwitter and just not even considering this as an option. It just has to be some other centralized, corporate-controlled place run by the same three shitty techbros who have decades of experience ruining the Internet for all of us.

I feel glad for the many friends I do have here, but it's one of those moments where it feels like being principled really does leave you lonelier than you deserve to be.

@silvereagle I feel like Mastodon has more neurodivergent people and I'm appreciating that a lot more than I expected to.
@Neybulot @silvereagle
Beeing neurodivergent means we do stand for our principles and morals
Beeing neurodivergent makes us lonely and let the "normal" people cut us off
@crazy_pony @Neybulot @silvereagle
Mainly I think Mastodon is just much more friendly to everyone in general. I've never seen anyone call someone autistic as an insult, or use any slurs on a Mastodon server that wasn't blocked by the mainstream ones. Twitter is pretty much the opposite, where every time I go on there, I'm subjected to the gamut of hate speech.
@Nuki
@crazy_pony @silvereagle This is why I don't understand why people would want more Twitter by going to Bluesky, absolutely befuddles me
@Neybulot @crazy_pony @silvereagle
Brainwashed by corporatism to not understand that there is a better way, and that if we follow it, if could lead to a better world.
@silvereagle my only complaint is that you can't see the full list of followers of a given account, which I assume has something to do with how this service is designed.
@ThatBloodyPinko @silvereagle it depends on your instance and how much crossover there is between the interactions of them.
Well that and relays and fedifetcher can help too.
@colinstu @silvereagle right, that I get. But it still doesn't help matters. 😌
@ThatBloodyPinko @silvereagle those last two definitely help. Depends if they get setup though. Finding a good server was the most nerve-wracking thing for me (which I resolved just by rolling my own, but not like I expect others to). But hey it helps others in my instance too.
@silvereagle holy shit, this. I don't know what they think is going to happen other then the same thing with bluesky as it did with twitter. It is not a savior.
@silvereagle @simon At least there are tools to block ads/trackers on your entire network. I installed this a few months back and you'd be shocked at the number of times Alexa and Roku devices report to their mommy to track me. Alexa especially still tracks when I don't do anything just leave them idle. https://pi-hole.net/

@silvereagle Yuuuuuuuuuuuuup, it is like watching people who just got done burning their hand on the stove eyeballing a cooking range like it's going to be a way better time, even when both options have already had PLENTY of red flags

And it's always "oh but Mastodon is so HARD to use, I mean I think I heard someone say that and I definitely haven't spent more than 5 minutes trying to use it but like, yeah, not worth the effort"

@silvereagle I'll admit I haven't fully given up Twitter yet, because I follow a lot of artists there. I'm just here and there at the same time.

The longer post lengths and the different clientele of this particular Mastodon instance means I can type out messages like this and I have greater confidence they'll be read and appreciated. In other words, this space feels better set up for civil discourse. I've tried doing similar on Twitter but it's more difficult.

@Intaglio_Dragon @silvereagle I’ve noticed a few artists I followed really tied their horse to the ship and refuse to leave it. For a few of them I do feel bad for because they did spend a lot of time building their profiles up. I just hope more of them come to their senses and make profiles elsewhere while they can still get the word out to maintain some of their following.

The ones who refuse to leave will need to come to terms with it sooner rather than later.

@silvereagle Mood. It's depressing seeing so many people flee to Dorsey and Zuckerberg's new fash farms.
@silvereagle it's also sad to see people compare Bluesky with Mastodon and loudly proclaim
@silvereagle isn't it, supposedly, gonna stop being centralized?

Like, is this
really a criticism?
@silvereagle
I think at least part of that is people following where the majority of artists are going. Mastodon is a lot of fun, but I think part of the artist side is finding the right instance that will support their work, be NSFW friendly as needed, and be easily found.
I started on Pettingzoo and quickly abandoned that once they started blocking a lot of furry content. For someone who shows up and posts a load of stuff right off the bat, that can be exceedingly frustrating if they picked the wrong instance.
@silvereagle
I imagine for folks that have commissioning artwork as their income Source going to the biggest audience Twitter clone
would take president over the morals

@silvereagle
Reminder that we all have the power to be involved here: when you see people talking about leaving #Twitter, remind them that Mastodon exists, suggest a couple servers, offer to help them out with it. Our biggest strength here is that we are a community that has a direct incentive to make a real and tangible investment in bringing users over, and therefore, that we have a reason to become directly involved in getting people to get over here.

I got like five people onboarded in the 48 hours. If everyone in the community could get at least one person a week on average to join, we would be doubling in size every week.

@silvereagle yes! All these people moving to/asking for invite codes for Bsky when Mastodon is right here
@silvereagle Not being mainstream is a blessing, really, else we can expect getting flooded with the most unhinged and extremist accounts, much like Twitter ended up being

@silvereagle

The problem: everyone knows some Fediverse app is probably better. Especially if you set up your own domain ahead of time and get used to properly posting/curating all your stuff there, but it's a pain in the ass to set up full of bruising learning the whole way.

My contribution to the problem: I do not want to talk someone through all the steps needed and concepts involved in even a simple mastodon instance and then deal with them whining about how the other stuff was "easier" because I can only say "Of course it was, they aren't going to get you to sit there and blather about what you might wanna buy so they can rush that info off to other companies if they don't make it comfy/smooth ahead of time" so many times...

@silvereagle also, there is a RIDICULOUS amount of baggage around fediverse programs as the place where a bunch of The Worst People (who couldn't stay on corporate social media because they were so atrocious) had to go... And also the place where Old School Forum Drama causes all sorts of "Wait, I can't see my friends' toots anymore because these two admins are having a pissing contest!?"

Mastodon literally is the jewel of a crucible heated by extremists too spicy for Twitter and shitty admins who had the same "I can run this and become popular like I wasn't in high school" attitude that wrecked a LOT of forums and made big corporate "No, the people moderating this know that it's a job" social media seem appealing back in the aughts.

I am having a net good experience here but I'm not gonna pretend that there wasn't some fuckshit that happened right out in public for everyone to see that scared a bunch of folks away...

@silvereagle

But ultimately, this always applies:

#TwitterMigration folks often just want #Twitter without the baggage. Which is why how one sees #BlueSky and similar services vis-à-vis #Mastodon depends in large part on what one thinks Twitter's baggage actually was.

@silvereagle it's frustrating to see people not even TRY
