I haven't been following it very closely but looks like Mastodon's monthly active user count climbed back up to 2.1M over the last couple of weeks. Not far off from our last peak!

@Gargron  Not bad! Hopefully we reach new high by the end of this year! Go Go #mastodon

@Gargron I understand that more than half the people who went from Twitter to Threads have gone back. At some point they will try and dump it again and something with fewer influencers and not owned by a billionaire may seem worth a look.
@wscottwatson @Gargron
Good luck dumping it if you also have an Instagram account. Dumping Threads also dumps Instagram. That sneaky Smuckerborg.
@Gargron I noticed that people in mastodon like to share cat's pictures 🐈. Maybe we need to attract more dogs fans!
@Gargron can you point me to your data source / API for tracking active users? I'd like to be able to share this with my research community. Thanks!
@Gargron probably not a lot of Nazi or disinformation accounts among them too!
@Gargron just ask again: can we login by user name or account name besides email? it would be more easy, flexible and secured, more privacy, thx
@Gargron all the shareholders are happy.
@Gargron Great news! How is the monthly active count calculated?

@Gargron That's great, but I feel like Mastodon can still do more to promote itself as a viable Twitter alternative.

Maybe you guys can show how to use it in a cohesive and easy to understand way, that might get more users to join as I've seen that's one of the reasons that scare them away from using the site; It seems too complicated to the regular person.

@Blaster1360
@Gargron
hm
i dont think it has to be
you have to pick a site, prefferably based on how well you'd fit in, sign up like normal

and follow people
the multiple timelines can be confusing but are quickly explained

there is much to learn about this platform, but the above knowledge is enough to get you set up

@orsinov @Gargron that's true, Mastodon does offer specific severs if that's what you're looking for, I'm just saying to a new user who's just fed up with Muskrat and wants a good Twitter alternative might see it as a little intimidating & might be hesitant to use it.

Maybe mastodon.social could be the one promoted the most, and a new feature could recommend some servers based on your interests?

I'm just thinking of ways to make this platform more user friendly as I do want it to succeed.

@Gargron While I totally understand you watching the metrics, Mastodon has always proven not to depend on those numbers when it comes to quality interactions. I find public discussion on here so much more valuable.
@Gargron at least should be organic. Not like twitter bundled with bots
@Gargron 2.1M must be divided by 10 to get closer to real data. I can't understand how you can include as active user someone that did one time login a month ago. My 2cc 🀟
@Sampei If they didn't count users that logged in a month ago then many active people would not be counted. Most users do not re-login every day and most probably stay logged in for weeks so I think counting anyone who last logged in within a month ago as active is a good way to make sure those people are counted.
@antifawarlord I'm sorry but I disagree. By "login" I mean people who have opened mastodon once in the last month without interacting. My instance now has 38 active users, actually there are 3 or 4 of us. The others are people who have never written even a "hello". To me those are not active users.
@Sampei I think we are in agreement about the definition of login lol... That's exactly how it's counted in the code. At first I thought you disagreed with the month interval so I explained why it makes sense to count a month - but I see you just disagree with counting logins as active. I don't care either way & agree it would be more intuitive if active meant taking actions on the site, but then you wouldn't be able to compare numbers with all other sites that count logged-in lurkers "active".
@Sampei It would just make Mastodon artificially look worse than reality when the press does comparisons.

@Sampei @antifawarlord It's sad, and a bit rude, to join an instance and at least not join in threads once in a while.

I did have one bad experience once though. I jumped into a thread with a reply once and was disparaged and called a rando. If you don't reply to a thread once in a while it's hard to get noticed.

@Sampei @Gargron that sounds pretty much the same as any other site calculating monthly actives.
@Gargron I like it better than Threads.
@Gargron is this MAU for mastodon.social alone or all instances federated with mastodon.social?
@[email protected]

Current count of registered users at instance mastodon.social is approx. 1.4M.

@[email protected]
@nick @Gargron that’s very helpful, thank you. So the MAU is for a set of instances, I assume. Would you know what set of instances the post is considering for the MAU metric?
@[email protected]

Unfortunately i don't know, which figures Eugen is referring to.

I collect statistics on my own project https://www.mastodonien.de for just some instances (approx. 300, most of them using the german language).

Other data collectors exist, e.g.
@[email protected]
@[email protected]
@[email protected]

Difficult to get real figures in a federated universe.

Also... are figures just shown for #Mastodon instances or also for other #Fediverse platforms like e.g. #Friendica, #Pixelfed, etc.?

@Gargron some bloggers on YouTube are talking about it. That's how I got here)
@Gargron
I had number totals on my boost and like buttons this morning. Any body know what happen to them?

@Gargron
I hope it keeps growing but 2.1M is tiny compared to other social media sites. I suppose they started out small too.

I think part of the problem for some people who are interested in joining is trouble picking an instance from the thousands that are available. There is a list of instances but probably most people don't know about it.

@Gargron in the YouTube / disgruntled ex-twitter circles, I see a lot of misunderstandings around the concept of servers. I have heard a lot of high profile people say that servers are isolated from each other, causing them (and their followers) to not give Mastodon a shot. Maybe we suck at advertising πŸ™‚
@Gargron I mean, I'm here, and I'm some schlub from the west coast. People are showing up!
@Gargron We need to get some news agencies of all kinds over here!
@Gargron I stopped using it for a bit, and then Threads came out, and I was SO tempted to join because everyone was on there, and then I heard that Threads has announced they will eventually implement ActivityPub so I can follow all the people on there without needing to actually BE on there so I've doubled down and I'm back on here.
@Gargron Define "active user" (-;
@Gargron I joined, went back to Twitter and am back again. I still have an account on Twitter but trying to break the habit. It would help if I could find more reliable journalists and funny folks here. It’s harder here but increasingly worth the additional effort.
@Gargron this is hard to understand tho 😩
@Gargron Twitter isn't going to be Twitter anymore. It's X Corp. They are even changing the logo. This really is the dystopian future.
@Gargron I lost all contacts to mastodon.social after the server upgrade on det.social /o\ There is no way to find out, why this happened and how to prevent it, isnt it? (Or to restore it?)

@Gargron

Is that 2.1 across all instances or your specific instance?

@Gargron
As a single user instance owner, at the top of my wish list for future developments would be to be able to see ALL following and followers from across all instances on a user's profile page, and the ability to instantly follow them from that list just by clicking a follow button. That part of the user experience of Mastodon is currently a big obstacle for the ordinary user, whereas further federation across more instances is vital for Mastodon as a whole.

@Gargron this place is pretty great.

nice job 🀩
