Seeing an influx of people making accounts here, a good time as any to make sure we're friendly and helpful to those who are new ^w^

Quick crash-course for Masto:-
- Don't use the official app, if Android=Tusky, if Apple=Ice Cubes is good I hear (I don't use Apple products so ask folks who do for advice on that!)
- Use Content Warnings for stuff you'd not want to see while scrolling; Rant, Violence, NSFW, etc.
- Follow Hashtags to start, I recommend #furry #furryart #fursuit anything else that interests you, posts with the # you follow will populate your Home feed until you follow more people
- Don't like something? Block it or Mute the word; seems obvious but I've seen others complain about it - you did it on the other sites, just need to do it here
- Need help with something? #mastotips & #feditips are your friend, folks here are generally quite helpful especially to newcomers so ask with the # and someone will help

With that out the way; Enjoy using Masto!

@JasperSparks
hey, thanks for the tips :3 may I ask why we shouldnt use the official app?
@mew no worries! the official Masto app has missing features like the inability to save toots as drafts, schedule toots, etc
@JasperSparks What about Mammoth? Is that a decent app (as opposed to Ice Cubes)?

@DraVulMep unfortunately I don't use Apple products, you could ask others using the appropriate #'s tho!

I'd advise #'s like 'feditips' and 'mastotips' as mentioned prior, along with 'ios' to reach the specific audience you're looking for ^w^

@JasperSparks very useful information here!
@oceanotter I'm glad so many are finding it useful!
@JasperSparks — [S] You what—we can follow hashtags? Oh, look at that! Live and learn! Poor sight means we don't spot everything, and we certainly didn't see that button. That'll be really handy!
@wearywulf yeah! it's great for newcomers who want to fill their Home feed and aren't following many people yet!

@JasperSparks if your instance is running a recent version of mastodon, the content filtering by keyword is great.

You can make it expire. And you can also choose if you want to have it block the content completely or just put it behind a warning so you can choose to unhide it.

Content warnings are a great courtesy to make others more comfortable but we also have tools like filtering to help ourselves.

@JasperSparks I did not know you can follow hashtags ^^;
@saberkitsune yush! it's a great way to populate your home feed while you have a lower following count~
@saberkitsune Yep! It's a really useful feature, and yet another reason for people to tag their stuff.

@JasperSparks Addenda:

- Subway Tooter is also good on Android

- "NSFW" is vague and unhelpful; say things like "lewd," "emoji spam," or "OSHA violation" instead

- Put content warnings on ASCII art, fancy fonts, and anything else screen readers might turn into gibberish

- caption images, or tag them so that people with time and spoons can suggest captions

@JasperSparks ivory requires you to pay to respond to other people 💀
@FirebirdAde @JasperSparks what’s wrong with paying a developer for an app they develop? Lol. Not to mention one that had twitter abruptly completely kill their last clients.
Ivory is great.
@colinstu @FirebirdAde is it a per time payment or a one time thing?
@JasperSparks @FirebirdAde $1.99/mo or $14.99/yr (1.25/mo), and that gives access to their iPhone and iPad and desktop app.
They charged back when it was Tweetbot, but it was also the absolute best Twitter client back then too.
🤷‍♂️
@colinstu @FirebirdAde thank you for letting me know! As mentioned in other posts, I don't have Apple products myself so was going off what close friends had advised 😅

@JasperSparks If you are posting NSFW images, use the NSFW hashtag so people can filter it out who read Mastodon in public!! If it is not something that you would show your boss and boss's boss, then tag it!!

And the furry hashtag does NOT automatically imply it is NSFW!! Don't use the furry hashtag to mean NSFW!! You can use both together if appropriate.

This rant brought to you by someone who is tired of people finding new ways to get around my porn filters when reading on a non-porn account.

@JasperSparks I'm actually glad to see a influx of new users again!

And like what others say, just ask if you need help! together we can make Mastodon work very well for all of us!

@JasperSparks
I use Fedilab on Android. I didn't like the Tusky interface, but that's just me. 😁
@morrigankig it's one of the excellent things about masto/fedi, the endless customisability both in apps and the range of apps available!
there is something for everyone!
@JasperSparks Yep. The complete opposite to El Musko's world 😅
@JasperSparks And since you like cuddles have one from Jessica 🤗
@JasperSparks Great tips! Just one change up, for the apps I would suggest @ivory for iOS (it's made by the same folks who made Tweetbot before Elon killed those), and for Android I'd suggest @moshidon (it's even open source!).
@JasperSparks Out of curiosity, what's wrong with the official app? I use Tusky just cuz that's one of the recommended options from the furry masto thingie I was reading.

@malachai
From my previous experiences with it, it doesn't include the ability to draft or schedule toots along with a few other creature comforts Tusky has; like being able to have any TL in any order along the tabs section (up to 5 options) - personally, I have from left to right; Home, "Friends" (List), Notifs, Specific Hashtags, DMs

Granted, it's been a few months since I last used the official Masto app so maybe it's improved, but other folks keep saying how much better Tusky is by comparison

@JasperSparks never knew about tusky and this is genuinely a game changer thank you so much for this post
