With Twitter rebranding itself out of existence, millions of websites will have to update their "follow" and "share" buttons.

A perfect opportunity to finally add Mastodon or Fediverse buttons.

@eloquence Everyone could also just refuse to follow suit—and we could delight in the resulting egomaniac meltdown. Communities belong to their denizens; this is the moment for that to overcome the Capitalistic trappings of the company bozobrains bought. C'mon Erik, say yes!
@ninavizz Maybe we can bring the bird over here, give it a new loving home
@eloquence YES! Flashmob-flood the fediverse with cute pictures of birds and elephants from the wild.
@eloquence @ninavizz … and call it “Bird Classic” for those who remember the “New Coke” debacle.
@eloquence @ninavizz we gotta get the bird out of there fuck
@eloquence eventually people will come around to Masto, because everything else is spoilt garbage now
@eloquence I must look up how to add a Mastodon button to a Wordpress site.

@PatrickOBeirne
Hi Patrick, you may be interested in using the Fediverse icon we developed over the course of two years with consultation from various Fedizens would were interested in a better icon.

Find our pinned toot, or hashtags (#)fediverseIcon (#)fediOrigami, or simply find the repo here.

@PatrickOBeirne @eloquence
We just spent an inordinate number of hours adding as many fediverse icon variants as possible to this page.

https://git.disroot.org/fediOrigami/fediOrigami

If anyone's social button style is not on the page tell us. If it is common, or your site isn't behind CloudFlare or Amazon we will add it.

@PatrickOBeirne @eloquence

Wordpress has the icon in with their other social media icons. I have it on my site.

For my own website, I created these 2 Mastodon Share buttons. Feel free to use.

A Fediverse button would be better, but I have no idea for a design of that.

@PatrickOBeirne

@eloquence I don't know how they could do a Mastodon share button because it wouldn't know what instance a person is on. But the generic link button would do. And I also have a browser plugin to share to Mastodon that remembers my instance.
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence yeah this is a significant obstacle unfortunately. If there was a robust solution then it would be an easy win for WordPress core.
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence ??? I already share to Mastodon via the app I'm using now. You just need to be logged in already.
@eyrea @eloquence It's not the same in a browser.

@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence
I've been sharing stuff on Mastodon via phone and web for months now. If it were annoying, I would have noticed.

I'm really not sure what makes Mastodon uniquely difficult to share on. Having a share icon would be fantastic for visibility, but the instance doesn't matter, as previously claimed.

@eyrea @eloquence I just put the links into my posts. I don't find it difficult or onerous.

@eyrea
This works on the phone, yes, because the phone has a share mechanic between apps.

But on the desktop in the browser, there is no app to share to. You need to know the website you want to share to
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence

@Glatorius @Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence Or else you need to know Alt/option+D (or just select all and copy from the browser address field), or have a plugin.

But in those cases the browser still doesn't need to know your Mastodon instance, because if you copy the URL it doesn't matter, and if you use a plugin you'll need to be logged in anyway.

@eyrea
Yes of course, if you copy the URL it works... But copy/pasting a URL isn't a share button.

And plugin works too but that is more than needing to be "just logged in". It is an extra thing you have to install.
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence

@eloquence there's a mastodon button in jetpack for wordpress, it's a matter of switching it on

(still clunky to use, because there is after all no single site to direct people to. but it's there!)

@eloquence
Yep, switch out the Twitter button for a “close this window” X button.

That makes perfect sense! User won’t be able to resist clicking it.

@eloquence honestly Mastadon has just as poor branding as X is going to have.

Fediverse isn't much better. I've come to the conclusion Microblogging creators just such at branding.

@eloquence Or better idea: What a great time to ditch the stinking billionaire's platform once and for all????

#deletetwitter #deleteX

@eloquence Or.... maybe drop Twitter altogether.

I've already seen it drop down the rankings from the first social channel people mention to the last.

@eloquence If FontAwesome included a Mastodon logo, that would be a big step forward.
Font Awesome

The internet's icon library + toolkit. Used by millions of designers, devs, & content creators. Open-source. Always free. Always awesome.

@eloquence Squee! I knew I should have checked! Thank you!
@eloquence There must be UI designers still at Twitter, if they haven't all been fired, imagine them biting their lips, not wanting to be the one to point out that people click on X to *close* things... 😂

@eloquence
Speaking of "#fediverseButtons" you may be interested in using the #FediverseIcon we developed over the course of two years with consultation from various Fedizens, who were interested in a better icon.

Find our pinned toot that chronicles the development quite nicely (last we checked), or simply visit the repo:

@eloquence bold of you to assume they'll update the buttons, I still see websites with google+, digg, and del.icio.us share links

@esm @eloquence

The internet is littered with as many social media remnants as low Earth orbit is with space debris.

@eloquence watch as we find out that Musk has been trying to push everyone to the Fediverse the entire time 😂

@spankinspinach @eloquence

That thought did cross my mind, but only for a short time... replaced with "remember, Musk is an idiot".

@eloquence Do such buttons exist?
@dangillmor @eloquence I think we need to make some.

@dangillmor

Yeah - they generally ask for the instance name first, and then work like other share buttons do. One open source implementation is https://share-on-mastodon.social/ . Jetpack for Wordpress also has this built-in.

Share on Mastodon

A customizable "Share on Mastodon" button.

@eloquence After the way the bird site F-ed up the "follow our feed" widgets a couple weeks ago, this makes another great opportunity for organizations to simply get rid of all that stuff.
@eloquence I think two days off running on short domain. How many code lines will not work @charles_ex
@eloquence Today I was looking at a few of my older WordPress installs that still have Twitter social media engagement tools built into their themes/design, only to discover that most of the random Twittering plugins from six or seven years ago relied on API access and are now broken anyway. I know I'm now stripping out everything Twitter any time I touch one of my sites.
@eloquence
I hope this happen I really hope we can take the internet back.
@eloquence very true but I have little faith in this opportunity being used. Twitter masses are indeed asses.
@eloquence Just subtitute the Mastodon symbol for the bird. No need to make room for an additional icon.
@eloquence the same ones that still haven't removed the google+ button?
@eloquence what did they change now?
@eloquence Oh yes, perfect! On the opportunity for organisations to promote "social and discussion spaces [that] belong to us" I wrote, "Social Media Links for A People-Centred Community" https://wrily.foad.me.uk/social-media-links-for-a-people-centred-community
Social Media Links for A People-Centred Community

You! You, university! You, sports club! You, local library, city council, school, church, youth group! Your social media links could look...

@eloquence

The follow buttons aren't so complicated, and many people are using the Mastodon icon, which is easy to recognize.. Although it's less obvious if it should be "Follow me on Mastodon" or "Follow me in the Fediverse".

But the share buttons aren't so obvious. They require user input since the Fediverse instance is unknown.

What's your experience?

@eloquence Everyone shoul djust continue to call it twitter and use the little blue bird. Essentially, everyone should ignore Musk.

@eloquence Glad I deleted my twitter account some time ago.

#twitter #musk #elonmusk #twittercesspool

@eloquence

The thing about those Twitter and Facebook buttons out there on websites is that they are one of the ways those companies track your behaviors across the internet. The site owner thinks they're amplifying their own message, and often it will, but mostly it just benefits those big guys.

@eloquence I'm in the camp of questioning "will have to update" ... Maybe just "will have to remove"?
