With Twitter rebranding itself out of existence, millions of websites will have to update their "follow" and "share" buttons.
A perfect opportunity to finally add Mastodon or Fediverse buttons.

@PatrickOBeirne
Hi Patrick, you may be interested in using the Fediverse icon we developed over the course of two years with consultation from various Fedizens would were interested in a better icon.
Find our pinned toot, or hashtags (#)fediverseIcon (#)fediOrigami, or simply find the repo here.
@PatrickOBeirne @eloquence
We just spent an inordinate number of hours adding as many fediverse icon variants as possible to this page.

If anyone's social button style is not on the page tell us. If it is common, or your site isn't behind CloudFlare or Amazon we will add it.
Wordpress has the icon in with their other social media icons. I have it on my site.
For my own website, I created these 2 Mastodon Share buttons. Feel free to use.
A Fediverse button would be better, but I have no idea for a design of that.
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence
I've been sharing stuff on Mastodon via phone and web for months now. If it were annoying, I would have noticed.
I'm really not sure what makes Mastodon uniquely difficult to share on. Having a share icon would be fantastic for visibility, but the instance doesn't matter, as previously claimed.
@eyrea
This works on the phone, yes, because the phone has a share mechanic between apps.
But on the desktop in the browser, there is no app to share to. You need to know the website you want to share to
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence
@Glatorius @Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence Or else you need to know Alt/option+D (or just select all and copy from the browser address field), or have a plugin.
But in those cases the browser still doesn't need to know your Mastodon instance, because if you copy the URL it doesn't matter, and if you use a plugin you'll need to be logged in anyway.
@eyrea
Yes of course, if you copy the URL it works... But copy/pasting a URL isn't a share button.
And plugin works too but that is more than needing to be "just logged in". It is an extra thing you have to install.
@Nonya_Bidniss @eloquence
@eloquence there's a mastodon button in jetpack for wordpress, it's a matter of switching it on
(still clunky to use, because there is after all no single site to direct people to. but it's there!)
@eloquence
Yep, switch out the Twitter button for a “close this window” X button.
That makes perfect sense! User won’t be able to resist clicking it.
@eloquence honestly Mastadon has just as poor branding as X is going to have.
Fediverse isn't much better. I've come to the conclusion Microblogging creators just such at branding.
@eloquence Or better idea: What a great time to ditch the stinking billionaire's platform once and for all????
New suggested logo.
@eloquence Or.... maybe drop Twitter altogether.
I've already seen it drop down the rankings from the first social channel people mention to the last.
It already does:

Speaking of "#fediverseButtons" you may be interested in using the #FediverseIcon we developed over the course of two years with consultation from various Fedizens, who were interested in a better icon.
Find our pinned toot that chronicles the development quite nicely (last we checked), or simply visit the repo:
The internet is littered with as many social media remnants as low Earth orbit is with space debris.
That thought did cross my mind, but only for a short time... replaced with "remember, Musk is an idiot".
Yeah - they generally ask for the instance name first, and then work like other share buttons do. One open source implementation is https://share-on-mastodon.social/ . Jetpack for Wordpress also has this built-in.
The follow buttons aren't so complicated, and many people are using the Mastodon icon, which is easy to recognize.. Although it's less obvious if it should be "Follow me on Mastodon" or "Follow me in the Fediverse".
But the share buttons aren't so obvious. They require user input since the Fediverse instance is unknown.
What's your experience?
@eloquence Glad I deleted my twitter account some time ago.
The thing about those Twitter and Facebook buttons out there on websites is that they are one of the ways those companies track your behaviors across the internet. The site owner thinks they're amplifying their own message, and often it will, but mostly it just benefits those big guys.
@eloquence I'm in the camp of questioning "will have to update" ... Maybe just "will have to remove"?
