An immunocompromised person in my family got COVID for the first time, AT THE HOSPITAL because they stopped requiring ANY PRECAUTIONS. No masks, no nothing.

They can't avoid the hospital so that means they'll just have to roll the dice each time they go?

What a cruel world.

Immunocompromised means the vaccine doesn't work as well. So what the current US policy says is equivalent to "you're on your own" good luck! 😡😡😡

@timnitGebru omg... this is such a terrible thing to read, Timnit. Did your family member file any complaints? I can't even imagine how scary this is for your family. :(
@timnitGebru

Sadly it's like that all over Europe as well and it's bad for the rest of us too not just the immunocompromised. It makes no sense.
@timnitGebru it makes me so furious that *hospitals*, of all places, have stopped requiring masks. Like, as a high-risk person myself (still dealing with the aftermath of my first COVID infection back in March), I’m upset about every indoor place that’s stopped requiring them, but a freaking HOSPITAL?? Like, why would masks EVER not make sense in a hospital setting? I’m so, so sorry for your family member, and I hope they come out of this ok.
@writerethink @timnitGebru - One of the things COVID made me take in really deeply is “why in the hell have we not been masked in medical facilities for ages”.
@writerethink @timnitGebru Brigham and Women’s goes a step further. Masks not require but if YOU choose to wear one you have to put on one of their shitty surgicals.
@cferdinandi @writerethink @timnitGebru
They had that at our hospital too-not that they require them now, infuriatingly, but when they did-and I put it on, walked away from the front desk, then put my KN95 on and put that stupid blue one on top.

@westerling @writerethink @timnitGebru I refused to do so. I have a large face and don't want to compromise the seal of my mask.

I was refused service as a result. Currently looking for a new doctor.

@westerling @cferdinandi @writerethink @timnitGebru I did the same at a Toronto hospital. At their suggestion, which was a relief, as I didn't want to take mine off.

@westerling @cferdinandi @writerethink @timnitGebru note: when I wear my elastomeric mask there's no question, LOL.

It's a [breathe] mask, made in Ontario, shipping only in Canada iirc. In hot sunny weather yesterday, I walked 5 blocks after exiting the subway before I remembered to take it off. Easy breathing, not sweaty :-)

@deborahh @westerling @writerethink @timnitGebru I wish I could say that would work here, but it wouldn't. They simply fall back to "it's our policy," even when I pointed to the room of unmasked people and pointed out how illogical it was. Then pointed to the N95 logo on my clean, brand new mask.
@deborahh @westerling @writerethink @timnitGebru Also fun was the dude flirting with one of the receptionists who called me a "nut job" for still masking and told me to pick my battles and walk away.
@timnitGebru @cferdinandi @writerethink I’m sorry, I would sue them. Actually, we ran into that last year at a local emergency room. We ended up putting it OVER our N95s.
@cowgirlcoder @timnitGebru @writerethink That was an option, but I have a large face and didn't want to compromise the seal. Was refused service, and am now looking for a new primary care doctor.
@writerethink @cferdinandi @timnitGebru I absolutely do NOT blame you, and good for you for not giving in!
This is just… insane. :-(
@cferdinandi @writerethink yes!!! I was in disbelief when my mom told me that.

@timnitGebru @writerethink “we want to ensure your mask is clean and effective”

I guarantee you whatever it is it’s better than the no masks everyone else is wearing!

@cferdinandi

Oh, jeez. In general or only for certain procedures? I was thinking about seeking specialist care there, damn it.

@writerethink @timnitGebru

@siderea @writerethink @timnitGebru in general.

FWIW it’s inconsistently enforced. The PCP front desk in Foxboro is aggressive about. Other departments in the same building don’t say anything at all.

@writerethink @timnitGebru When we go for medical appointments, we're always subjected to a list of questions about possible Covid exposure. I have begun answering them with "My best chance for exposure is here, none of you are taking precautions."

@dkxkee @writerethink @timnitGebru

Why do they keep asking if we've traveled internationally? I'm pretty sure the call is coming from inside the house.

@unicorndeburgh @writerethink @timnitGebru They're more scared of foreign cooties than domestic, even though other countries are probably just as safe if not more so.

@writerethink One of my kids had to spend a couple days in the hospital about a month ago. We both wore masks, and basically none of the staff did. One person (a resident, I think) said more than once “You can take that mask off, you don’t have to wear it”

I’m beginning to think these medical staff don’t *actually* believe in germ theory

@belehaa @writerethink with an AA degree at most, probably slept through physiology
@belehaa @writerethink There are so many (mostly white women, of course) nurses who got their degrees and jobs through nepotism and who have a fundamental disbelief in everything about health and medical science. 🤬
@dalias @belehaa @writerethink @CassandraZeroCovid There is a shortage of nurses, based on generally poor working conditions. And also lack of access to training. That gap is partially filled by religious institutions where education in basic science is limited by doctrine. For example: https://www.ccu.edu/academics/nursing/ as opposed to the University of Colorado.
School of Nursing and Health Professions

CCU’s nursing programs in Colorado include bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees that integrate faith, learning & science, equipping you for a successful career. Apply now!

@writerethink Interesting that replies so far assume ignorance or incompetence. The person who told me we could take our masks off was a doctor – I just don’t recall whether they were resident or attending

My point about germ theory isn’t about training, or even competence. I get the feeling that, for this doctor, germ theory is a memorized fact, not something that they believe/understand at a gut level

@belehaa @writerethink They certainly don't believe in fluid mechanics or evolution (how does a bug capable of being spread by droplets NOT evolve to be aerosol spread, given aerosols are generated by almost every people do, like talking?)
@belehaa @writerethink People should start thinking for themselves instead of listening to others who don’t know the first thing about covid. I can’t believe how gullible people really are.😂
@writerethink @timnitGebru This shit show isn’t going to last long because many people are complaining. Keep it up folks !
@timnitGebru That's insane. Covid is still a thing. How could they not wear masks?!?!?
@timnitGebru DUDE, the hospital volunteer who wheeled me to my car after an outpatient procedure, engaged me in elevator conversation—giddy about local protests against masking, and expecting I would be, too. I asked how she could be working at a hospital and also eschew the peer-reviewed research supporting masking—and she just stared at me blankly. Yeah, with you in frustration. Americans really suck, sometimes.
@ninavizz @timnitGebru Did you get a "Why are you trying to stay safe from my screw-ups, neighbour?" stare?
@DEWLine No. Honest confusion. I live in a rural and isolated area. Disinformation and social isolation have created a unique cocktail of no-ill-intentions lemmingcrash. Even my mom believes the garbage. @timnitGebru
@timnitGebru it's the same here in France and I'm terrified every time I go to the hospital 😭
@timnitGebru Well that's propaganda for ya. Early in the pandemic, people seemed to be (compared to now at least) relatively OK with the masks. And then suddenly it became an imposition on your Personal Freedom and now people are declaring that they simply no longer care what the virus does, they're not masking any more.
@timnitGebru And yet I've had people on here haughtily informing me that the #pandemic is indeed over. 😱

@timnitGebru
I caught covid twice in a medical setting while recovering from my double lung transplant in a nursing facility. And the second time I got over it (having to go to the hospital and get monoclonal antibody treatment infusions) I caught norovirus a few days later so back to the hospital.

It's so exhausting navigating an immunocompromised life.

@timnitGebru I’m speaking as a guy careful enough to still be masking in a mostly vacant Starbucks, but it’s still baffling to me that masking isn’t standard practice in places like hospitals where the preponderance of people showing up are those in ailing health, possibly due to contagious conditions, epidemic underway or not.
@timnitGebru I’m so sorry and I hope they have as smooth a go of it as possible. It’s absolutely bananas how everyone wants to pretend we’re out of the woods when the reality is we’re just throwing vulnerable folks under the bus in the name of convenience and commerce

@timnitGebru I mask up for my one unavoidable quarterly nobody-masks clinic visit. A pushy nurse was hounding me about an elective testing appointment so I touched my mask and explained to her unmasked face "this is the only dangerous medical appointment I'm doing right now." She huffily blurted "But I'm vaccinated!"

After a slow 10-count to control my tone, I asked mildly "You do know that vaccinated people can still get and transmit Covid, right?" She literally FLOUNCED out of the room.

@timnitGebru Cases are on the rise. It's a real shame that business matters more than us.
@timnitGebru I'm continuing to be safe and mask so much for myself, of course, but especially so because of all my immune compromised family members. COVID has left them all with permanent issues. So sad that the people in charge have thrown the systemic fix to the wayside. I'm sorry that this is happening to you and yours.
@timnitGebru
All of us transplant patients are dealing with that! We all have required visits to our transplant team, to a transplant dermatologist, usually to the hospital's inhouse pharmacy because that's the best place to get our specialty immune suppressants... so we're in the hospital environment for at least a few minutes every month. And the only people wearing masks besides us are the actual transplAnt team docs and nurses.
@timnitGebru I’ll never read texts about primitive historical medical practices the same. It really feels like Covid exposed a regression in our society - we are living in the Age of Disenlightenment.
@timnitGebru how did it affect your family member?
@timnitGebru
My vulnerable spouse also contracted it for the first time during her MRI: tight spaces, no ventilation & no masks. Her respirator had the metal nose clip removed, but she was unwilling to wear the mask brace I suggested. Low viral load & Paxlovid resulted in a short (<7d) infection period, I reckon.

@timnitGebru My friend was recently exposed at a medical facility (2 weeks ago). She broke both arms in a fall and was recovering at some long term care rehab place. Then her roommate got COVID.

Luckily she did not get COVID (negative tests plus no symptoms) from the short exposure, but it was pretty scary. She has been vaccinated but she's in her 80s and is high risk.

I just don't understand why medical facilities resist masking and other COVID precautions.

@timnitGebru I'm very sorry that you and they have to deal with this. My immunocompromised loved one wore a mask that said "I am not disposable" in the early pandemic. She wasn't. They aren't. It's such a cruel policy.
@timnitGebru This is my nightmare. A family member is on chemo - immune system varies day to day, from decent to very very very low. :-( Thankfully, our medical spaces are decent so far.
@timnitGebru I am the only one masked in an AIDs clinic.... 😆
