I am a #3DPrinting noob, and today I tried making my first ever Big Thing.

It's a desk-tidy for the exact things that we use all the time with the 3D printer - a print-bed scraper in the back (the handle is a bit wider than the slot and will sit in that dip), three compartments for the pliers, filament cutters and [something as yet undiscovered], and mini front compartments for tweezers, pens, etc, plus a little dish for the USB-C-to-A adaptor.

It's going to take about 20 hours to print, oh my goodness. The hexagon walls make it take a lot longer than if the walls were solid, but while using less plastic.

I think I may be able to make the walls thinner, but I am not 100% confident with the medium and didn't want to make the sides too flimsy, so I'm playing it safe. If it seems very sturdy, I will make thinner walls next time, which should reduce the print time a lot.

Check out those little compartments! Adorable.

I'm nervous about leaving it printing while I sleep, but @Averixus will be up in about 6 hours (one third of print time), so hopefully nothing will explode before that.

I'm up and it's still only at 69%, but it's looking pretty good! :) I'm so relieved that nothing went wrong in the night.

It is finished and it seems to work! :) So I put it on Printables: https://www.printables.com/model/534192-desk-tidy-tool-tidy

Printables

You can, like, imagine a thing, and make it on a computer, and then one day later it exists in the real world!!! That's *amazing* that is.
@cassolotl
Very cool and nicely done!
@cassolotl I'm curious : how did you support the bridge at the upper end ? Just above the hexagon ??? :O
@boe I didn't do anything special, no supports or anything, I just kind of pressed "print" and hoped for the best, and it just somehow magically worked!
@cassolotl 🫣 I thought overhanging part were not so easy to do !
@boe Yeah, I thought so too, I have no idea why/how it worked so well! :D
@cassolotl I just started printing your design as well :) black PETG on #sidewinderX1 #fingerscrossed
@falsanu Aaaaahhhhhhh so cool! I bet it'll look badass in black! :)
@cassolotl we‘ll see tomorrow evening 😀
@cassolotl what kind of printer are you using!
@mym It's a Prusa Mini+. :)
@cassolotl nice! we got a prusa semi-recently and it's been such a good upgrade over what we had before
@mym Aww fantastic! :) Also I'm reassured to know that we made a good choice, we asked around for recommendations and we like ours a lot.
@cassolotl So basically, your 3D-printer helps you solve a problem caused by your 3D-printer?

@cassolotl there it is. It was a retraction torture :)
A really good design! Thanks 🙏

@falsanu Ahhhh it DOES look badass! 😁 Thank you for showing me, I'm so chuffed to see it out there!
