@aram @mmasnick My only concern with this piece is that it’s overly techno-optimistic, ignoring that sometimes things don’t work don’t work out well in the end as we adapt to a new technology (climate change…).

Still, though I worry about the impact on people as we adapt (and we might need proper regs not just copyright), I think he’s right about “AI” here!

@aram @mmasnick To be fair, comparing reading to training a language model is lazy if you know the consumption of the product is not the same as the incorporation of the product into a larger one. Most people who made creative works never gave permission to the data and ml engineers to re-use their works as data input. Most people who have their performance recorded never agreed to have it re-use outside the intended purposes.

@aram @mmasnick the performer of the songs for the movie Lady and the Tramp sued the Disney company successfully for not paying her for the incorporation of her performance on the VHS which was a new at the time.
