So, it's okay to destroy #Indigenous heritage sites, pollute the planet, and appoint corporate lackeys to advisory boards -- but if you protest and cause disruption, you could face arrest?

The Australian #climate #protesters cast as extremists

By Hannah Ritchie, BBC News Sydney, July 19, 2023

"In May, after several #ExtinctionRebellion protests, the South Australia government introduced a A$50,000 maximum fine and three months jail for anyone 'recklessly' obstructing public spaces, while laws passed in New South Wales last year created a two-year maximum prison sentence for acts disrupting major roads or facilities.

"#England, #Wales and parts of #Canada and the #USA have also adopted similar laws aimed at blocking disruptive climate activism.

"In Western #Australia, climate protesters say they have been 'disabled' by intimidating raids, strict bail conditions and orders which give authorities access to their devices and ban them from communicating with peers.

"According to Ms Grix, these tools were originally intended to deal with gangs and drug dealers.

"'To apply [that]... to climate defenders, who are protesting about environmental concerns, seems to be a massive overreach,' she says."

The Australian climate protesters cast as extremists

Counter-terror police have raided the homes of a swathe of Australian environmental activists.

"'Protest takes many forms, sometimes disruptive. But that's why it's effective, because it disrupts the everyday to demand attention for a cause," [David Mejia-Canales, a lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre] said.

"'As citizens of a democratic society, we should exercise a level of tolerance for disruption if the right to protest is going to have its full value.'"

@DoomsdaysCW
The previous government in Alberta, Canada passed a "Critical Infrastructure Protection Act," which was specifically intended to circumvent the right to protest.

Protest groups started handing out info sheets with the wording and legal analysis of the sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that guarantees that right.

@geobeck @DoomsdaysCW

It's a back to front political system when the protesters have the higher moral ground than the governments.

@empiricism @geobeck Power, corruption and lies isn't just an album by New Order.

@DoomsdaysCW @geobeck

I'm going to have a listen to that album.

I've been a music fan in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 2010's & 2020's.

I've noticed how pop music has also been generally commercialised.

How much pop music speaks out against the ecological sabotage that corporations & consumers are causing?

That's why non commercially owned media platforms such as Mastodon are critical if we are to mitigate commercial washing (inc. #Greenwashing )

@DoomsdaysCW In Bavaria (some say it belongs to Germany, others call it a "freestate") they are put in preventive detention.🙄

@DoomsdaysCW

The system is corrupt & protects the ecological vandals.

As Greta Thunberg said to the ruling power, to paraphrase "how long do you think you can get away with it?"

How long? Over the next decade their environmental incompetence will be visible for all the world to see.

AKA a climate crisis. That climate crisis has arrived (location dependent. For now)

But, as per usual, it's not too late to do what they should have done decades ago.
