IMAX movies like Oppenheimer that use 70mm film still require a Palm Pilot, and instead of rewriting the software they just made an emulator.

I don’t know why, but I love this. https://www.theverge.com/23801118/imax-movie-palm-pilot-oppenheimer

Here’s why 70mm IMAX movies like Oppenheimer need a Palm Pilot to work

In IMAX theaters around the world, Oppenheimer will play in its full 70mm glory. In the projection booth, a Palm m130 will help make it happen.

@tylersticka from a former film projectionist, this is super interesting to me.
@tylersticka I learned another thing! This def a good day 🙂
@tylersticka probably historical reasons :D

@dcreemer @tylersticka @lisamelton “IMAX Engineering designed and manufactured an emulator that mimics the look and feel of a PalmPilot”

I guess this is why I’m not getting licensing fees.

@keith_rollin @tylersticka @lisamelton I will happily testify in court that I saw you write similar code
@tylersticka M130? That's pretty new. I have an older Palm than that. Still have a Palm V somewhere.
@tylersticka I love this. Of all the platforms I’ve ever written software for, Palm was probably my favorite. Basically an instant-on Mac Plus in your pocket.
@tylersticka
If you have five minutes, I can put my hands on two Handspring Visors and two Sony Cliés…

@tylersticka

My question is, why is IMAX still on physical film. The movie is shot and edited/mastered digitally, so why don't they just use a digital projector like every other modern movie?

@atatassault @tylersticka the projection quality is higher

@givlucas @tylersticka

I don't understand how that can be the case. Since it's shot digitally and edited digitally, wouldn't printing it to film lower the quality?

@atatassault @tylersticka idk I made it up

@givlucas @atatassault Nolan shoots on film, not digitally.

Since I have made zero films and he has made many wildly successful ones, I’m going to assume he knows what he’s doing.

@tylersticka Well, if it works, why not? We don’t need an Apple M2 chip for everything.
@tylersticka Ex-IMAX employee here... It's been so long I'd completely forgotten about the QTRU!
