I'm going to keep saying what I think the majority of the users of #babka and #simcha instances believe(both #Jewish oriented) --- that #defederation is a step too far.

There are better, less severe actions that can be taken instead (silencing, etc) that would allow individual users of both instances to maintain connections with folks on the other instance, without being at risk of randomly stumbling across posts that violate the norms of one's chosen instance.

@jmb @jmb thanks to @celesteh who I first heard suggest this .

Hoping many more #babka and #simcha users speak up to stop this looming trainwreck.

@jmb @[email protected] @celesteh I am hearing from others that my characterization of what the majority feels, is probably not accurate.

If that is the case, then probably it is time to just accept this decision and move on.

@jmb @[email protected] @jmb This issue smacks to the heart of Mastadon's weakness: the burnout of well intentioned volunteer moderators. It's like having nested Home Owners associations with overlapping responsibilities and different visions of what rules are appropriate. I don't know how this can be resolved.
@jmb @jmb @jmb hey, just clarifying, I've talked to people and the majority see this as necessary here at Simcha, you and others with this opinion with accounts at Simcha are in the minority. Just setting the record straight on that
@kat @jmb @jmb thank you for the clarification --- probably it is never smart to argue based upon what one thinks the majority feels because perception of majority is so subjective if you don't do a poll.

@kat @jmb @jmb I am hearing from others on babka who are saying the same thing.

it sounds like it is time for all of us to accept what has happened and move on. I'm still sad but I will get over it. For me it speaks to broader issues of disunity in the broader Jewish community. It is not just about what is happening in the fediverse.

WHAT THE FUCK HAS BEEN GOING ON?

I've asked this before and gotten crickets.

@hadarbatjoyce @jmb @jmb

I'm not sure where you've asked, but we've made multiple announcements with explanations.

I'm pretty wiped out, but I can either dig up the posts or you can msg me and we can chat one on one.

@hadarbatjoyce @jmb @serge Short answer from someone who is trying to find a way to stay connected with both communities and is trying but sometimes failing to be neutral:

There are different opinions about moderation choices between the two instances, and there have been issues with broken trust. Both communities value Jewish community and have the ideal of being as inclusive as possible, but there are major points of difference.

I hoped that there was a way forward that . . .

@hadarbatjoyce @jmb @serge . . . Wouldn't require defederation, but I have heard from mods and key members of both communities that there isn't enough mutual trust to make continued federation possibke, and that they see this as a community safety issue.

I'm sure others (from both communities) will differ with my telling of the story, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

Now that I am sort of caught up...
This situation is lunacy.
