Did see a few butterflies today as well. This teeny little fella never gave me a look at the upper wing artwork, but was amazed to zoom in close and discover a thin little edging of blue scales.

The detail in butterflies is just astounding to me. I had no idea that was happening right before our eyes.

All these butterfly shots taken with the Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro, pushed to F2.8 because I love the shallow depth of field.

When I was curating the galleries for that last blog post I kept zooming into this pic to see the blue flecks. Again and again and again. Blue flecks!

How is this magic possible, just flittering about in front of our eyes. And we ignore it every day.

The whole fuzzy jaw vibe is definitely growing on me.

Butterflies with beards (and rings).

Honestly struggling to see a downside to butterflies.

Survived a walk in the woods today. Saw a lot of very small butterflies. A few swallowtails drifted past us, but too cool to stop for a photo.

I ended up chasing a LOT of sapphires today, and got to photograph very very few. This little buddy posed on a twig for me, so that was a treat!

I love going through the photos at the end of the day and finding little gems like this that I totally forgot happened.

Another sapphire I think. I love it when you get a hint of the upper wing hues.

When the local moths are even more colourful than the dancing monks! Just in awe of these miniature moments of nature flittering past me every time I take a walk outside.

This little guy had such a lovely paint job. Less of an "Evil Warlord" vibe and more "Let's play with paint tins".

Clicked on a link to a photographer with loads of lovely butterfly shots, from Bhutan, and something seemed not quite right. Especially seeing as I am a little familiar with some of the species.

Do people use chemicals or bait or something to disable butterflies or even kill them, just to get a photo? Is that a thing? I really hope that's not a thing.

That would be the exact opposite of feeling joy about a chance encounter with nature.

@ewen artistic! What were you using to get these shots?

@HyL

The camera is a full-frame LUMIX S5II. Good AF and very nimble body, so makes it easier to have in hand all day (waiting for the right moment!)

The lens is the Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro. This is working harder than the camera body. It's what gives me have a chance to get something in focus with a moving target.

I like shallow depth of field from a fast lens, and F2.8 at 105mm is creating some nice bokeh :)

@ewen Saw a photo of one of these once before that correctly identified it as Mid-Century Modern Moth

Turns out this wacky dude is an Emerald Tiger Moth (Callindra principalis) and it was such a buzz just meeting him!

Just a little update to the Emerald Tiger Moth (Callindra principalis) seen zipping about Bhutan at 2900m.

I first saw one two days ago, and posted those pics above. But then yesterday while visiting Gangtey Gonpa another one landed right in front of me while walking the grounds of the gonpa!

@ewen Gorgeous, and that background is perfect for it.
@ewen You should try waiting near a florescent lamp at night. It's a good makeshift light trap for observing moths. Usually moths are more attracted to florescent lamps compared to LEDs or yellow sulphur lamps.

@ubi

I'll have you know I'm in bed by 9pm. Not one to go hitting the town of an evening!

I'm still doing all my bug photography with natural light at the moment, and just enjoying these chance encounters. Had seen a few of this species in dried/desiccated form over the last few weeks. Impressive beast to finally meet one on one :)

@ewen What a stunning creature, and beautifully captured Ewen 👏🏻

@stevenlawson

Thanks Steven :) Just loving these little interludes on my Bhutan journey with a macro lens and little creatures from the forest. I used to enjoy bird photography but could never build compositions the way I really want. Flowers and flutterers are so much easier to work with!

@ewen wow, this is a beautiful creature! Thanks for sharing!
@ewen Looks like if Marvel had a moth 🤣 Spectacular!
@ewen Love the close-up revealing the design. It looks like pixel-art.
@ewen Yesterday the most stunning iridescent blue dragonfly landed on the couch next to me in my garden, but unfortunately moved on before I could get my macro going on my phone 😩

@samvarma

My favie dragonflies are the ones that return to the same spot when you startle them!
