Mastodon feels like the most independent social network so far.
@liroyleshed Well, to be pedantic, it's more like the #fediverse. #Mastodon is just one platform of the fediverse. The fediverse uses #ActivityPub. That's the entire beauty of the whole realm - it's completely independent. There are no ads and no corporations.
@liroyleshed check out #Calckey . It's like a Twitter, discord, mastodon cross..and super fast. And is federated.
@liroyleshed agreed. Threads already feels very...twitter?
@thetaoistonline @liroyleshed agreed, and especially the bad parts of Twitter, where you just have trash shoved in front of your face to entice you to react in outrage

@liroyleshed lo es, lo es. Una prueba de que la descentralización da libertad!

It is, it is, a proof that descentralization gives freedom!

@liroyleshed I agree. I'm going to let go of Twitter, not bother with Threads, and 'get into' Masto.
@liroyleshed I feel the same. Hell, you just followed me, JUST NOW! I've found the engagement is crazy and sometimes meaningful over in the fediverse.
@liroyleshed Welcome, it's an interestingly new concept to me. There's a lot to learn and much engagement to be had. I feel as though the interactions here are more real, less trolly, and when required they are actually insightful deliberations to educate and grow. I hope you find the same :)

@liroyleshed Well, instead of being dependent one soul-crushing multi-national corporation that is helmed by a billionaire psychopath, it is dependent upon 10,000 admins, funding mastodon instances with spare beer money and handling moderation requests in the evening after finishing their day job.

You are trading one dependency for another but it is still a positive move (at least in my opinion).

@liroyleshed
Some parts are that independent, that they never encounter each other.
@liroyleshed
@wauz Interesting
@liroyleshed
It's the same as we had it with IRC servers. You can run a Mastodon or any other activity-pub standard server stand-alone. There is no urge to federate.
@liroyleshed It needs to get a lot familiar to 'normal' people though
@liroyleshed So the Washington Post comes gunning for it. Can't have something running wild and free that isn't backed by a billionaire or a right-wing crank...
@toxtethogrady They did?
@liroyleshed I saw a link but did not read the article. Something about child porn or explicit comment involving an instance in Japan.

Twitter rival Mastodon rife with child-abuse material, study finds

The report raises safety questions about alternative social media sites.

The Washington Post
@liroyleshed for now yes, it is one of the bigger alt social media platforms but do not forget about tumblr and others. Mastodon is fine if microblogging is your style. I use 10 platforms, some like this for microblogging, some for news and long format articles such as substack, etc. I have online products so microblogging is something I use less frequently. Fine for social, business wise where it serves
@liroyleshed It helps when there isn't an owner demanding this n that
@liroyleshed I must admit I still do not use it as often as I used twitter back in the day. But it is feeling more comfortable each day.
@liroyleshed independent of what? 🤨
@paninid @liroyleshed Reporters, celebrities, media sources, and politicians.

@liroyleshed

agreed. I wonder if the structure of #atproto means that #bluesky will never actually be very decentralized.

@liroyleshed No ads, no algorithm. My mental well being has improved so much. In addition I am learning new things daily from the people I follow. It is pretty damn good.
@liroyleshed Anything that talks ActivityPub will do. But it seems like a lot of people think Mastodon feels right. Personally, i also like what @dansup is doing with Pixelfed, too.
@liroyleshed not that it's made any difference for most folks, haha. Threads is definitely running away with all the growth!
