Went to a radar museum today and frankly, more systems should have dedicated buttons called "pigeons"
@benjojo Pigeon one recieving radar ping over
@benjojo What does the pigeons button do?
@fell computes a heading for a friendly plane to get back to base!

@benjojo Oh! I thought it would boost the sensitivity to include small objects on the radar screen.

@benjojo @fell

Where does the label come from? (I can't easily find a reference for "pigeons" in aviation context.)

@robryk @benjojo @fell birdstrike? If a plane is birdstricken it needs to get onto the ground quickly?

@benjojo It's for their backup network connection.

RFC 2549: IP over Avian Carriers with Quality of Service

@benjojo looking back to the audience for approval as I slowly press the "Slr" button
@benjojo I like penguins more ;)
@benjojo what does the "Sir" button do
@enkiv2 @benjojo Turns whoever is within the beam into a knight.
@enkiv2 Slr (ess ell are) = slant range?
@enkiv2 @benjojo it tells the former President of the US an apocryphal story
@benjojo @gannet LUNCH is also a useful keyboard button.
@th Is "3" also labeled "STALIN" 😱
@benjojo @gannet
@[email protected] new keyboard system: we have control, super, meta, shift, and now, to replace alt-gr, pigeons
@amyipdev @benjojo we have lighting console GrandMA2/3 with “oops” and “please” buttons
@benjojo Air Force has a whole book on geese
@benjojo we've got both kinds of buttons, "pigeons" and "slur"!
@benjojo Love me some chonky buttons like that!
@benjojo what a lovely soft glow. I miss buttons.
@benjojo
😜 I read the button below as BANG RANGE.
@benjojo“Defruit” is my favorite.

@benjojo RFC 2549 which is a protocol to handle internet using pigeons.

That said it's an April Fool rfc but a group of Norwegians did get it actually working once

@peter @benjojo Technically they PoC'd RFC 1149 (so, no QoS). It was a Bergen Linux User Group initiative. Alan Cox was there.

Here's a Wayback Machine link of the original site (which was lost in a server crash, AIUI): https://web.archive.org/web/20010603170620/http://www.blug.linux.no/rfc1149/

@jima @benjojo thanks, I knew it was one of the avian RFS'c they did it against - with the proviso they didn't use ductape but proper holders for the paper
@benjojo @rgarner Right—how do we get this into the next version of Kubernetes?

@benjojo there's a radar museum??

bucket list

@benjojo Finally we know why birds suddenly appear: the pigeon button.
@benjojo This strikes me as something @vampiress might enjoy.
@benjojo one of the most common problems with ground radar are birds
@benjojo slightly related, this panel from a Swedish fighter aircraft has a mysterious "Malmö" button. Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden, but not sure why this warrants its own button.
@benjojo Brings back memories. I was allowed to use an RAF radar console in the early 1990s to see if the lobes reached high enough to detect meteors (they didn't, and weren't expected to). I was just shown where it was, sat down and twiddled. They even brought me beer and sandwiches. Unimaginable today!
@benjojo added to the set of novelties.
