Hi all,
I'm new to #infosec and don't really have any colleagues/contacts in the industry.

I've been a software engineer for a long time and am about to embark on my final capstone project for my Master in Cybersecurity.

I'm sending this toot to try and find out where people turn for their news and ideas for research areas?

Thanks very much :)

@edwardsmatt hi Matt! Inspiration for areas of research will likely happen organically as you branch out and experiment with the many different infosec subdisciplines. Follow your curiosity, and when you come across something that really captures your interests, go nuts with it.
@epixoip that makes a lot of sense! thanks for the advice!!

@edwardsmatt I have suggestions for the news front, I'll not try to answer the others as your area's too different from mine 😛

Includes accounts that are good for opinion and analysis, as well as pure news:
@lorenzofb
@GossiTheDog
@molly0xfff
@josephcox
@campuscodi
@Pwnallthethings
@pluralistic
@evacide
@sans_isc
@wchr
@Iwillleavenow
@gcluley
@timnitGebru
@kimzetter
@matthew_d_green
@mattblaze
@thegrugq

(n.b. a few of these heavily overlap into other areas of speciality)

@edwardsmatt

oh and
@dangoodin
@ncweaver

also if you want a little bit of news with a large dollop of shitposting (who wouldn't?!), I can thoroughly recommend:

Thanks @davehay, I'll check that out for sure... Subscribed @gcluley 😉

Let's start here on Mastodon by getting your timeline moving. Did you know you can follow hashtags here? Yep, just the same as you do with accounts. Then start following people that produce the content for those hashtags that interests you and before you know it -- your timeline will come to life. Then you can start bookmarking stuff and building a nice bookmark list of things to read.
@hackdefendr no I didn’t know! Great advice for a n00b! I’ll definitely take a look at that 👍🏻
