Playing through Cyberpunk 2077 again, I still don't get why it cops so much hate.

It truly is one of the best games ever made, it just had a rocky start like nearly every single open world FPS RPG out there. Think of games like Skyrim and Fallout 3 and 4.

Yes, there were problems with Cyberpunk, but the game systems, the city itself, are all spot on.

Sometimes games get hate long after problems are fixed, for no good reason; sometimes it's the opposite #Gaming

@sortius I'm on my first playthrough. It was shaky at the start for sure, but it's now a deep and complete experience (vehicle handling remains a bucket of shite). The world-building is second-to-none.
@trib @sortius I thought deus ex human revolution did it better.
@richservo @trib Deus Ex was good, but it didn't feel anywhere near as alive as Night City does
@sortius @trib have you played yakuza games? I started Judgement and man RGG knows how to make a living city.

@richservo @trib not really my style of game, but I do have it. I just couldn't connect with the game as readily as I did Cyberpunk.

That said, I do know they're highly regarded games by fans of the series

@sortius @trib I’ve played yakuza zero and kiwami so far. Just started judgement. They are such great games. And the world is very lush and later games have much more people randomly interacting.
@sortius @trib of course nothing compares to RDR2. That game has such a living world there’s things happening that you can’t even see!
@richservo @trib for sure, Rockstar did really well with RDR2. RDR was good, but 2 certainly took it that step further
@richservo @sortius 5 years after its release, it remains the standard.
My entire mindset for gaming is playing on the easiest level so I can spend time looking at the world - RDR2, the Horizon games, the Spider-Man games, the two Division games, the two most recent Ghost Recons, and Cyberpunk all have beautifully realised environments that are far more deep and subtle than they appear and that reward just noodling about.
@trib @richservo which is exactly what I look for in an open world game. Sure, have the "collect X" or "X/Y missions completed" stuff, but it's those organic situations, or hidden spots you just stumble across, that keep me coming back
@sortius @richservo I'm still pissed I missed the storyline of the father and son building the house outside Valentine in RDR2 because I was too focussed on getting to the next thing.
@trib @sortius there’s so many little side stories that are always happening. It was so fun to just explore. Even the world. I found a cave behind a waterfall with Indian cave paintings inside. Not a part of a mission or anything. Just there in case you look behind that waterfall.
@richservo @sortius I agree on how alive Night City is. I've not got into Yakuza - too many others.
@sortius Although,I wouldn't call the game's systems to be spot on (the police system is completely broken, no metro), as it is today it doesn't deserve the hate it still gets, the soundtrack is fantastic and the storyline is simply a masterpiece, but people still hate it because the first experience is what counts.
@iceCat @sortius I will say, I am looking forward to Phantom Liberty very much.
@trib I'm more exited for Project Orion, because the game as it is now with the patching and content expansions makes me think it's a test bed for the sequel.
@iceCat that's a good long way off, though. I might even get to play all the way through Witcher 3 before then!
@sortius Yeah, I think it’s pretty good now and it also has a decent modding scene these days! It for sure had a rocky start, it was unplayable for me. I didn’t get into until….1.4 I think.

@TheMadIrishman yeh, it was a bit of a mixed bag for people. I had a few minor bugs in 1.0, more stage direction than game breaking. I did have one game breaker, but I went back to a previous save and it fixed itself.

They really have polished it up now, and with a decent graphics card (I just bought), it's truly stunning to just walk around in the city

@sortius I had the dreaded audio issues with the crackling and popping constantly. It was infuriating. Lol

@sortius I recently picked up Cyberpunk and have been playing it for the first time (24 hrs in, on Act 2).

I’ve noticed some bugs with NPC movement during some of the story beats. Twice the game seemed to give up trying to make sense of what was happening and just automatically reloaded the game from my last save (luckily not losing much progress).

I’ve also experienced NPC voice lines skipping a beat and playing two lines of dialog at once.

Overall I’m still enjoying the game, but I would hesitate to call the game totally fixed.

@sortius

While not dissimilar to other releases, it was more severe in the case of 2077

it was rushed to release at a time that coincided with a growing awareness of crunch in the industry, and cdpr received a fair bit of scrutiny from that awareness.

While it was quite buggy on PC, it was barely playable on console at launch and was pulled from the PlayStation store as a result, so the majority of players had a pretty poor first impression (console unit sales tend to dwarf sales on PC).

@sortius people love to hate on something popular, especially when there are reasons to hate on it (in this case, the unfortunately buggy launch of Cyberpunk).

My first run, I made it to the last mission and admittedly never finished it, but still loved the ride. Haven’t finished my second run, but I’m being more meticulous about things, and it’s still as fun as I remember it.

@MEXdave1997 I think this is my 4th run through, and I'm doing similar. I was level 14 before doing Arasaka Tower, so it was fairly easy 😆

I'm doing a stealth pistol build, again - it was my first run's build - just to see if it still works.

While I'm not getting 60k crit headshots, its 5k crit headshots are doing just great 😁

@sortius it’s fine. One of the best ever made is a huge stretch tho.
