@DevWouter Someday you'll be able to say, "I remember when they only had 2 users!"
@DevWouter The Netherlands don't have a government right now :)
@leroc @DevWouter probably how the civil servants behind this were able to get this done right now. so it's a fait-accompli when the next IT minister with Meta shares turns up
@DevWouter
Now we're talking! I hope other government follows soon.
@Ginafla @DevWouter
It sounds rather unbelievable (since in most IT things my country is really not avantgarde), but the German government is already in the fediverse for some time: https://social.bund.de/about

social.bund.de

Dies ist der Mastodon-Server der Bundesbeauftragten für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit (BfDI).

@wvs @Ginafla

Cool! looking at the domain I can imagine the Dutch government copying the German government.

@DevWouter As the Dutch government is pretty racist I can imagine it being much more of the same.
@DevWouter agencies,.not individuals at least for now. In the US i'd like to see a way for Congress people to have official accounts.
@DevWouter is dit echt? Ik kan er verder nog niks over vinden?
@DevWouter I read that as "beeherder" and was a bit confused and pleasantly surprised 😇

@olgapek

Let's hope it get some buzz 🤣

@DevWouter now they can disagree not only between themselves, but with masto users too!
@DevWouter How come this is how I find out the Dutch government collapsed?

@blake

Let me spoil you and tell you that the government collapsed because one party was forced to become more strict over an issue they created.

Also, our political system works a bit differently. So "government collapse" can be seen as healthy.

@DevWouter From reading an article on it I do understand it means they're not doing any more rule-making, but they're still there doing regular everyday procedural things, so it's still alive and working, unlike (say) a US government shutdown.

@blake

Correct. The current cabinet consists of 4 parties, and they no longer wish to work with one another in the manner they agreed on 1~2 years ago. Dutch politics has always been about multiple parties working together, and we don't have a "strong leader." Instead, we have cooperative leadership.

It's a whole different system compared to the USA

@blake

Every type of democracy has its challenges. That being said, I wish the USA a lot of wisdom.

"[at]beheerder[at]social.overheid.nl"

"Mastodon beheerder"

"Functioneel beheer account t.b.v. de officiële mastodon instance binnen overheid.nl"

Dus dit is meer een soort systeembeheerder? Hebben ze wel genoeg boutjes/moertjes/stekkertjes/snoertjes?

@vanderZwan

Someone needs to install the software and create the first account. 😉

@DevWouter After social.bund.de and social.network.europa.eu I waited for other EU governments to join.
@DevWouter I hope the governments of other nations follow suit!
@DevWouter While the government itself dissapears?

@energiepirat

No, the Dutch government is more than only the cabinet (the main, but not only, executive body). And cabinets that fall trigger an election, after which we have a formation and get a new cabinet (this is the very short version).

@DevWouter Thoughts @stux?
@FallsMom @DevWouter I've been trying to get them to setup that for over a year now
@stux  Probably George & Washy convinced them!
@DevWouter I wish Canada could do the same
Good. Let's hope all the politicians abandon Twitter now. Twitter has been far too much an official channel for Dutch politicians and journalists.

@DevWouter ah that's very interesting thanks for sharing! I have been a big advocate for a publicly owned Mastodon-style platform for a while!

What might a publicly owned social media platform look like?

@DevWouter Awesome! Can’t wait to see the Netherlands and Holland join them.

@aethervision

The people in the Netherlands are called Dutch. And Holland refers to two of the twelve provinces. 😁

@DevWouter A likely story. More likely your country was trying to get out of a bad relationship and changed it’s name to avoid detection. I completely understand. We’ve all had that first marriage. Hell, we used to be married to the UK, not that you can tell from the language.

@aethervision

Yeah... About that...
Guess who sold New York to the UK? It was called New Amsterdam before.

And later, the Dutch provided the American Rebels with French gunpowder to make money and mess with the UK (which resulted in them declaring war upon us).

And it's not the first time we've done that. When the Dutch were at war with Spain, we sold weapons to our own enemies.

Like most European superpowers at that time we did terrible things.

@DevWouter So…y’all like selling stuff and the color orange. Got it.
@DevWouter Sensible country! Wish ours followed suit.

@DevWouter please post a lot of pictures of how happy people are riding bycicles

@bookstardust

That would be the same as asking British people to post images of how happy they are when making tea. 😁 😂

@DevWouter Uhm, bikes do have a climate impact and make for good policy choices in a climate crisis. Tea is for the brits is pretty much connected to a colonial history. I would dare say there is a difference in happiness levels 😅

But I did also not really see that you just posted a link to the account. So that was my mistake, since you are not the person to address after all

@bookstardust

Haha, Nice save 🤣
And yes, I agree with you.

@beheerder Maybe also have an account that promotes the Netherlands by sharing pictures? It seems that photos of happy people on bikes are quite popular.

@DevWouter Wait, it was those kind of migrants?

@Csosorchid

😂
I like to think that the #fediverse has a nice open-border policy.

(Context: The Dutch government fell over (im-)migration issues the week they launched a Mastodon server, most likely to migrate away from Twitter)

@DevWouter didn’t they collapse?

@Agora
Only the cabinet (the head of the executive body), not the whole government. It just triggers a new election. It's more that most decisions (but not all) will need to wait until a new cabinet is formed.

Most cabinets don't complete their term. Dutch politics is mainly based on cooperation, and we have a cabinet consisting of multiple parties. So when relationships breakdown the cabinet no longer has a majority they ask the Dutch to cast their vote.

@DevWouter noted.
😬 seems to me that this happens a lot then?
