So I'm not really sure how I'm going to figure out which Twitter alternative I'll adopt as my main one. That's why I'm going to post some of the same stuff on Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, and Twitter and then just compare what happens. I don't know what else to do. This will likely take quite some time before I settle on a platform.
@gorskon I don't fancy jumping into more of Jack and Zuck's nazi/antivaxxer-friendly bullshit when I could just... not, really.
Time to move away from the billionaires' walled gardens, I reckon. Less of the noise, more of what you actively want, even if engagement takes a hit for a while.

@gorskon Kind of depends on what you want out of your platform. For example:

- If your goal is to spread your content far and wide Mastodon is likely the wrong place (based on number of users, Threads would be better).

- If your goal is to seek feedback on your content I’ve found Mastodon much more valuable (the feedback per post and the quality of that feedback is higher).

I’m sure you have criteria I haven’t considered. Good luck.

@gorskon The only time I think of #twitter is when someone posts about it here. I walked away in November and have zero regrets. I'm never even curious what's happening there today. Of course, I'm not a science educator nor am I here to spread any particular message. The sets of eyes that see my posts will be different.

Other than cats and astronomy, of course.

Mastodon
@gorskon Or pick a neutral, paid service that still supports ActivityPub (like micro.blog, I'm sure there are many others) and stop worrying about platform lock-in?
@gorskon I'm rooting for either here or, in second place, Bluesky. Both have their pros and cons, but Threads just sounds like an absolute nightmare

@gorskon

May I suggest the talk.vaccines USENET group?

I promise: the loons have not changed a bit since the heyday of that newsgroup.

@gorskon

As a plus point mastodon has a more progressive user base … but also more ‘rules lawyers’

@gorskon Of course you’ll do what you feel is best, but for whatever it’s worth: I won’t do Twitter because I don’t want to be counted when advertisers decide whether to pay a guy who posts Nazi memes. And I won’t do BlueSky because Dorsey’s funding the 3rd party effort that seeks to throw the election to Trump. Just my own thoughts.
@gorskon I have settled in on #Mastodon personally. I like the engagement and the greatly reduced footprint of people trashing other people. I never supported FB or Zuck, so zero interest in Threads. Musk destroyed anything left worth keeping at Twitter. BlueSky seems a lot like Twitter, but not in a great way. Jack supporting RFK,Jr is also a nightmare. This is a friendly place with people engaging on a wide variety of subjects. My 2 cents.
@gorskon not feeling spoutible?
