Hey there new people! Are you looking for a nice, well-run server to move to? I maintain a small site that lists them at:

➡️ https://fedi.garden

All of the servers listed obey the four rules of the Mastodon Covenant (https://fedi.garden/about-this-site/), but it's more than just Mastodon servers and they are all under 50k members.

I also do featured server posts introducing the listed servers.

@FediGarden Question: if I move to another server, all my post will be gone? Thx

@tweedle_cat

If you move your account to another server and you don't delete the old account, the old posts will still be there on the old server but they will redirect people to your new account.

@FediGarden why isn’t #islamophobia part of your “covenant?”

@InayaShujaat

There are a number of specific bigotries not on the list (including ableism etc) because I was trying to copy over the terms from the Mastodon Covenant (https://joinmastodon.org/covenant), in order to keep it as simple as possible for servers to comply.

I ought to expand the stated forms of bigotry, but would need to check with each server listed to make sure they comply with an expansion.

I'll try to work on this.

Mastodon Server Covenant for joinmastodon.org

@FediGarden Thank you. One of the unspoken issues with Mastodon is the fact that omission is often interpreted as permission. Because islamophobia is rarely mentioned, many think it’s acceptable behaviour. It’s also a top-down problem, with admins and mods engaging in incredibly islamophobic behaviour. The broader community does nothing about it, because it’s not explicitly listed as offensive behaviour.

@InayaShujaat

It's difficult with clauses about religion because some people (for example at the moment white christian fundamentalists in the USA) use religion as an excuse to do really horrible things, and I wouldn't want to shield such people from criticism.

But other people are victims purely because of their religion or tradition or background, for example the Rohingya in Myanmar, and they need protection.

1/2

@FediGarden The Rohingya are Muslim, and are persecuted because they’re Muslim.

Islamophobia is recognised as a form of bigotry, and it’s very different from the far right claiming to be discriminated against.

@InayaShujaat

I agree, I've tried to raise this in discussions about Facebook and their role in that persecution. (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/dec/06/rohingya-sue-facebook-myanmar-genocide-us-uk-legal-action-social-media-violence)

The question is how you formulate an anti-bigotry policy that protects victims but does not protect aggressors.

Northern Ireland is another example where religious divides don't necessarily connect to specific religious beliefs. People are being persecuted there because of the group(s) they belong to.

@InayaShujaat

Did you have a specific instance's rules that would be a good model?

I'm really not qualified to decide on these things, would be nice to see how it is done correctly.

@InayaShujaat

Also, it's not always clear where the lines between religions and traditions and nationalities are.

There can be atheist members of a religion, as paradoxical as it sounds, because they are culturally part of a polity that identifies with a religion.

If there is a form of words that dealt with all of this, it would be really helpful.

@FediGarden thanks for doing this! The server I moderate, heads.social, and our friends at shakedown.social both meet your criteria and are open to new members with approval. Both are broadly music oriented with a lot of content related to the deadhead/psychedelic counterculture world, but in an easygoing and non restrictive way. We are both strictly moderated in the "no hate/no maga BS/all good people are safe here" sense

@mrcompletely

I've messaged the admin account on heads.social.

@FediGarden he's at a concert this evening, but I'm sure you'll hear back before too long. Thanks!
@FediGarden Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
@FediGarden Out of curiosity, why is there a 50k member limit?

@ajboilanger

I'm trying to encourage people onto smaller servers, but there were certain niche language servers which were over 10K so I settled on 50K as a limit.

It's arbitrary really, but I don't want to list mega-instances.

@FediGarden smaller servers to help foster a real community I’m guessing? Sorry if the questions are silly, still trying to get used to everything being federated and whatnot

@ajboilanger

Yes, they do, and they help protect the network, and they have higher quality moderation.

I did an article over on @feditips about why this place is on so many servers:

https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers/

Your questions are not silly at all! They make total sense if you're moving here from a centralised service like Twitter or Facebook or wherever.

@FediGarden thanks! Love your accounts btw
@FediGarden Uhm, nerdculture.de is missing, maybe because at the time where you conducted the list registrations were closed to limit number of users
@FediGarden Hewwo, is there a possibility to get on this list? Because "tyrol.social" (Austria) obey the four rules of the Mastodon Covenant AND has less than 50.000 members.

@FediGarden @feditips Thanks for sharing all the tips on using Mastodon

I am new to Mastondon, learning new things everyday.

Just wondering is there any instance that include discussion on home servers, self hosted sites, home automation , etc

@fuzzygel @feditips

That's a really good question! I'm amazed to find there doesn't seem to be.

Maybe self-hosting people just self-host on single user instances rather than gather on a shared instance?

Regardless, you should be able to find a lot of people to talk to about this on here, it's a very popular topic. Maybe try following lots of hashtags on the topic like #SelfHosting, #HomeServers etc?

There are a lot of self-hosting accounts listed on @FediFollows at https://fedi.directory/tag/self-hosting/
