Big news out of Ohio. Mobilizing young voters this year will pay off in spades in 2024, where the Senate majority hangs on Sherrod Brown's seat in the Buckeye State.
@georgetakei The OH legislature is already trying to throw a road block in the way by holding an Aug special election (which they voted to do away with until it became convenient to bring it back) to determine how many votes it takes to modify the state constitution. The August vote is crucial now as well. Maybe it'll backfire gloriously on them.
@danfromwv @georgetakei 🤞🍀🙏 NO on 1, folks! And I’m proud to say my family/friends and I are on the petitions.

@danfromwv @georgetakei
As this DKos story notes, there is also a push for a November measure to legalize pot, so there will be another substantial constituency available to activate to defeat the August referendum.

Ohio abortion rights backers submit nearly double needed signatures for fall ballot measure

Groups hoping to enshrine abortion rights in Ohio’s constitution delivered nearly double the number of signatures needed to place an amendment on the fall statewide ballot, aiming to signal sweeping widespread support for an issue that still faces the...

@georgetakei 2024 could be the last opportunity to participate in a free and fair election, or at least as close as we come to it. #voteblue
@georgetakei Ohio is gerrymandered to be deeply red so it will be a tough push, everyone in favor of body autonomy and freedom of choice - please get out and vote!

@georgetakei
Grateful for positive political news for change.

I still feel that two amendments should be added to the Constitution.

1. Terms limits should be set for SCOTUS.
2. Ethics should be defined and adhered to.

@georgetakei #OHGOP is trying to make #Ohio a one party state. The August primary is CRITICAL Support #SherrodBrown, GOP candidate #FrankLaRose runs further to the MAGA right every single day.
@georgetakei yeah, we have to get through the special election in August first. Gerrymandered legislature in Ohio is attempting to change the rules for the November ballot measure.
@georgetakei
Don't forget to mobilize these voters to vote in the August 8th special election where Republicans put a change to up the requirement of constitutional ammendments to 60% from the current 50%. Otherwise the November abortion ammendment may fail!
@noah @georgetakei 60% is very doable for popular measures on ballots.
@tienle47
I wouldn't bet on it in Ohio. It also requires signatures from all 88 counties in Ohio, up from the current 44.
@georgetakei
@noah @georgetakei Doable doesn't mean easy. The key word is popular. Pour enough money into the campaign for lots of positive advertising and a good ground game. It would have been better if they had waited until 2024, but nothing stops them from trying again next year.
@georgetakei
Need similar measures in FL and TX.
@darthstar @georgetakei Florida is currently collecting signatures to do the same.
Florida has a unique right protecting abortion. Its framers designed it that way.

More than 40 years ago, a Florida law professor saw the state's privacy amendment as "insurance" if Roe v. Wade gets overturned. It's being tested.

Tallahassee Democrat

@darthstar @georgetakei
FL already did it and had subsequentceffirts to undo it overturned. In 1980

Republicans banned it anyway, ignoring the state constitution.

Everytime we have ballot measures recently, the gerrymandered supermajority passes laws weakening whatever was passed as well.

@georgetakei Politically speaking, the GOP is the rabid dog that caught the car. Dobbs radically impacts every woman in the United States, and some of those women are going to remember who did it to them in 2024. Voter turnout escalates when there's skin in the game.

@darrylrscott @georgetakei

We get a monthly reminder of Dobbs.

There's not enough campaign money in the world to pay for such personal repeated reminders on any other issue. Republicans thinking the issue will die down or go away fail to recognize this.

@iHeartHockey29 @georgetakei Unfortunately, I do believe too many women didn't recognize that the Supreme Court was on the ballot in 2016. It's depressing to watch how women's body autonomy is methodically being erased. As Joni Mitchell sang, "You don't know what you got 'till it's gone." I hope 2024 is a bloodbath for the GOP.
@georgetakei the “Senate majority” hangs on defending 23 Senate seats, not just one. And, it would be great if non-voters would join the fray & give Biden 60+ seats to help end the GOP (& DINO’s) obstructionism.
@georgetakei too bad they didn’t understand voting in 2016 when they helped trump win. They really need to stop thinking democrats need to earn their vote and understand they are voting for their own future. The only job is keeping republicans from winning.

@JJPeterson or, here's a thought: candidates could earn their votes?

Keeping Republicans from winning isn't really win when the other candidate is basically just a Republican in a blue suit. The DNC needs to put forward better candidates.

@cogspace here’s a thought, don’t be tedious. People running for democratic offices earn the votes of the majority of democrats and no single demographic can do it alone, so I think y’all need to remember you need earn my vote too and mobilize my demographic too. And running for office is not a beauty pageant, it’s a competence pageant.
@cogspace btw, socialist, do any of you have a clue what real socialism is? It’s not getting us democrats to pay your bills, give you health care, an apartment and an allowance so you can be a creative. It’s you putting 12 hours a day/6 days a week of your labor into the collective. You kids aren’t ready for that part of socialism.

@JJPeterson kid? Lol. I'm 36. I take fiber supplements. My hair is going gray. But I'll happily take the compliment on my apparently youthful appearance. It's been a while!

I have no delusions as to what socialism is. And if you think 12 hours a day, 6 days a week is a scary workload, you're far more out of touch with working Americans than you realize. Holy shit.

@cogspace your appearance is profile of an elephant.
@JJPeterson hey now, that's just rude.
@cogspace omg. You’re clueless.
@JJPeterson me clueless? You're the one who thinks one day off a week is some kind of novel horror lmfao
@JJPeterson let's save both of us a lot of time and cut to the part where you block me because you don't actually have a cogent political theory to argue about, just a bunch of baseless ad hominems.
@georgetakei assuming the radical right assholes don't demolish our state constitution in August. Which is their plan.

@georgetakei

My state voted to protect abortion rights on 1980 and the Grand Wizard of our state ignored our state constitution.

@georgetakei If I recall in 22, people were stating democrats will take control of the Senate, yet they just manage to keep it and they lost the house. Democrats need to do more and go from neighborhood and get people to vote. Specially those of us minorities and women. Sadly Latinos voted for GOP in 22compare to democrats. Please if I am mistaking let me know regarding Latinos. Specially in FL.
@georgetakei We also need Ohioans to vote NO on Issue 1 on August 8 in order to keep the existing simple majority threshold for passing new constitutional amendments. Our legislature is trying to raise the threshold to 60% to make it harder for the abortion access issue to pass. https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2023/05/22/ohioans-vote-on-issue-1-on-aug-8-what-does-it-say/
@georgetakei Ohioans also need to vote in the special election in August that will make it harder for ballot measures like these to pass in November. It's not just one vote, it's two!
@georgetakei I am in blue California, but will support Sherrod Brown's candidacy in my native state. The importance of this race cannot be overstated. Brown is a passionate defender of the working class. Cannot afford to lose his voice and his vote in the Senate.
@georgetakei This is why we must vote NO in the August Special Election, which is a GOP attempt to impose minority rule in Ohio!

@georgetakei is definitely important to vote for women and their doctors to direct each woman's health care journey.

The #Ohio legislature is trying to move this vote to August so they can have lower total #turnout (with a higher R percentage). So voters should be ready to vote in August and November.

#abortionrights #womensrights

@georgetakei Oh don’t worry, Republicans will make voting even more difficult in Ohio.
@georgetakei The gop and SCOTUS has shit on every American and their rights and freedoms to succor the christo-fascist terrorist gop base. Truly a cult.
@georgetakei only in ohio am i right my babes
@georgetakei If they don't vote in August to defeat the Republican attempt to restrict citizen initiatives, it won't matter what they do in November.
@georgetakei We are working hard here in Ohio to make that happen. But first we have to Vote No on Issue 1 in August to protect our right to pass those amendments.
