@davidrevoy I'm wondering
Currently Instagram is a closed place: if you don't have an account you can't really browse the user's content
That's one thing Elon tried to do with his toy in the last few days, and users weren't happy
For Threads, you need an Instagram account, but is content will be available for everyone, or just for registered users?
Twitter users may will just migrate from a proprietary closed place to another one, Mastodon and Fediverse may not be really impacted by them...
@gunchleoc @grum999 @davidrevoy You can already glance at Threads profile (even with Firefox, don't know why you said it's not working). For exemple : https://www.threads.net/@netflix
Don't forget to wash your hands and your browser after ;)
@brunospy @gunchleoc @davidrevoy the things is: do I really want to go on it?
may be curiosity will let me take a look, bu I clearly won't create an account
@gunchleoc @brunospy @davidrevoy Yes, by default I try to block all trackers and in this case, going to provided Threads link you just have a blank page with Threads&Meta logo
They don't need me, I don't need them, I just won't change my browser's settings for something useless to me
@nemo @davidrevoy You'll just have to block the thread domain at the server level or at the account level. And problem solved.
For instance, here is the feature displayed in this screen capture.

@davidrevoy
Fabulous artwork!
I have mixed feelings about Threads. I'm trying it out for now.
@davidrevoy lol! had a similar moment just today:
@alicedotjpog @davidrevoy
Its an activitypub platform with atrocious privacy implications and a lot of instances are not willing to federate with it, and they apparently cannot legally operate in the EU as a result.
Its attached to your Instagram login.
Musk is suing because of alleged "stolen trade secrets" via ex twitter employees, and scraping twitter for data.
Thats about it. Low privacy corporate mastodon with typical silucon valley data mining spyware built into the mobile app.
@davidrevoy A powerful image that, this account is my very first foray into any kind of 'social media'.
I'm a retired, long-time, grey-haired IT consultant so no luddite, but have always steered clear of the all-powerful corporate behemoths and yearned for the 'good old days' when thousands of individual subject-specific forums were independently run by moderators for zero renumeration.
I know they still exist of course, and use some, but when the non-techies of the world found the internet they were almost entirely charmed into the more sinister alternatives, which have captured folk for way too long.
The open/decentralised nature of ActivityPub and particularly Mastodon has been pinging on my radar for a while now and is the thing that's finally.. cautiously.. tentatively.. brought me into the fold.
Here's hoping this or something like it can be the way forward, and the Zuckerbergs of this world will eventually lose their shrivelled-claw-like grip on how the world communicates.
