<<Auto insurance rant/questions>>
After previously having the understanding that other people driving my car are covered so long as I’m in the car with them, today my auto insurance said that that is not true. If someone else is driving my car with us both in it and there’es…
…an accident, they will not cover anything at all.
Is this normal for other people’s policies?!?! Friends taking turns driving during a cross country trip is something everyone i know does. Have people just never checked and they’re driving around while not covered?!…
…or other cases such as someone is being the designated driver for a group going home?!
Or is progressive total shit?
Happy to hear recommendations for another company to switch to.
@Straander US News ranked Progressive last (10th out of 10) in a car insurance company for consumer loyalty, and middle of the road in cost. USAA is supposedly the best, and we’ve used Amica & GIECO which I thought were pretty good.
@camstonefaux dang. Usaa is for armed services and family only
@Straander Having to deal with a Progressive claim lately, they make their stuff seem very shiny and easy until you're actually in an accident, then they try to screw you if you're not very careful (moreso than other insurance I've had). I wouldn't be surprised at all if they lie to you here too and try to scare you into not letting people drive your car but would begrudgingly cover an accident.
@dash yeah what they told me doesn’t seem to match up well with how car insurance is supposed to work.
But whatever, they win. I’m switching to allstate this week.

@Straander From what I learned from different brokers I worked with, it will cover other drivers if it's an eventual drive like, if you had a drink and they drove you home. If you're in the same household or using the car more extensively, coverage would not apply.

That said, I do now know how it would work on a long/cross-country road trip etc

@Straander "Typically" if you let someone borrow your car, and they got in an accident. If the other driver was at fault, their insurance company should pay for damages. If the driver of your car was at fault, your car insurance will likely cover damages. There are exceptions, such as the condition of the driver at the time of the crash. Exclusions, such as driving while under the influence, still apply. It also does vary by insurer.
@camstonefaux my prior understanding was that you had to be in the car with your friend driving the car to get any coverage.
