Sooooo #Virginia just fucked up access to porn sites (TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN!!!).

Legislatures have no idea how tech works.

It's like your uncle who has too much malware on his Windows 8 laptop and thinks TikTok is nothing but young women dancing provocatively (oh those algorithms do tell, don't they!).

So.... I'll be discussing how to spin up your own VPN at tonights #FXBGHackers

Cause yay.

#SB1515

@tinker Changing to another DNS resolver (or running one locally with Unbound) is not a solution to circumvent it?

@TritTriton - Uhhhh... I don't think so.

It appears that sites are doing geolocation / geoblocking on IP addresses.

So circumvention is changing your exit IP to be in a different state than Virginia.

Tor and VPNs / Proxies work well for that.

@tinker Well, I’m asking that because here (France), they want to apply such pornsites ban and we’re afraid that it won’t be just a DNS filtering, this time… :/

@TritTriton - It entirely depends on the mechanism of block.

Here its just legislation that says porn sites have to validate that a user is an adult (in a very unreasonable, technologically infeasible manner).

So it places the onus on the porn sites themselves to block users based on geolocation or they could be sued / charged with a crime.

So, pay attention to how France will ban pornsites. If its at the ISP / IP level, a new DNS that resolves the IP address may work.
